Dear Friends,

Well, this is the end of September. Can you believe it? The air is crisp and the foliage will be turning soon. I have a few great things I want to tell you about.
First, I would like to remind you of the great FREE event we have coming up this week - "Backyard Bird Banding" by the Missouri River Bird Observatory on Thursday, October 1 from 3:30 to 5:30. This is a fun and interesting event for bird lovers of all ages. All school groups, scout groups, home school groups and individuals are invited. See the flyer below.

Next, I would like to inform you about the City of Washington's Beautification Project. You can purchase trees through this program, and the proceeds will benefit the Franklin County United Way. I love this project. The City is purchasing the trees from a local Missouri native tree grower, who will deliver the trees here to be picked up by area residents. So join in and help this worthy cause.

Last week at a trade show in Chicago, Scott and I received the "Garden Center of the Year" award from True Value Home and Garden. Here are a few pictures of the event. In the first picture, we are being congratulated by John Hagedorn True Value CEO.

I'm sad to see my garden dwindling, but this bucket of goodies I picked Sunday is scrumptious! I have greens and kohl crops coming on for fall!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, it is time to renovate your lawns! We have you covered with grass seed, fertilizer and other supplies. If you have been hit by lawn fungus, you can repair the damage NOW. So stop by and let us walk you through your project (Or we can do it for you! call 636-239-6729).

Enjoy Fall,

Sandi

Tree - branchesBenefits of
Planting Trees

Most often, we plant trees to provide shade and beauty for our landscapes. These are great benefits, but trees also provide other less obvious benefits.

* Trees are often planted as living memorials or reminders of loved ones or to commemorate events in our lives.
* Even though you may own the trees on your property, your neighbors benefit from them as well. Through careful planning, trees can be an asset to your entire community.
* Tree-lined streets have a "traffic calming" effect. Traffic moves more slowly and safely.
* Trees can be placed to screen unwanted views or noise from busy highways.
* Trees improve our air quality by filtering harmful dust and pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide from the air we breathe.
* Trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe.
* Well-placed trees can reduce your cooling costs in the summer by shading the south and west sides of your home. If deciduous trees are used they will allow the sun to pass through in the winter.
* Evergreen trees on the north side of your home and shrubs around the foundation of your home can act as a windbreaker to reduce the cooling effect of winter winds.
* The value of a well landscaped home with mature, healthy trees can be as much as 10% higher than a home with no or little landscaping.

Is Your Garden for the Birds?

One of the best things about the yard and gardens is enjoying the birds that are frequent visitors. Attracting birds is easy if you provide basic necessities including food, water, shelter and nesting places.
Birds need a diversity of trees and shrubs, especially evergreens, so that they can hide from predators and seek shelter from weather. These same trees and shrubs provide nesting spots for birds that make open nests, such as robins, cardinals and finches. Other birds appreciate birdhouses.
