The Best Time of Year is Now!
When I was a kid, I loved summer - no school, warm sunshine and lots of fun and mischief to get into. Now that I'm a mother and grandmother, my taste in seasons has also matured. Over the years, I have come to enjoy all the offerings of fall. The cool, crisp mornings that gives way to warm days and starry nights. Fall color is exceptional with the turning of leaves on trees - colors so vivid and alive that they jump out of the landscape. Driving past the fields of orange pumpkins instills the kids with the excitement of Halloween candy yet to come. The treat of eating sweet grapes fresh off the vine and juicy apples plucked from the trees.

Benefits of Planting Trees
Mo st often, we plant trees to provide shade and beauty for our landscapes. These are great benefits, but trees also provide other less obvious benefits.
* Trees are often planted as living memorials or reminders of loved ones or to commemorate events in our lives.
* Even though you may own the trees on your property, your neighbors benefit from them as well. Through careful planning, trees can be an asset to your entire community.
* Tree-lined streets have a "traffic calming" effect. Traffic moves more slowly and safely.
* Trees can be placed to screen unwanted views or noise from busy highways.

Lawn Aeration
September is the perfect lawn renovation month for our area. Aeration is a key step in the renovation process. Aeration is one of the most important cultural practices available for your lawn. Aeration is the process of removing thousands of small cores of soil 1" to 3" in length from your lawn. This process helps control thatch, improves the soil structure, helps create growth pockets for new roots, and opens the way for water and fertilizer to get to the roots of your lawn.
Thatch on your lawn's soil works like a thatched roof. It sheds water and prevents fertilizers and insect controls from moving freely into the soil. Thatch that has become too thick can require a major lawn renovation. Aeration helps thatch to break down naturally by mixing the soil cores into the thatch and speeding up the decomposition process of the thatch.
Call our Landscape Division at 636-239-6729 for professional help with Core Aeration and all your fall lawn maintenance.

Celebrate National Indoor Plant Week
September 14 - 18, 2015
Indoor plants are "green heroes" for a variety of reasons. This week-long initiative raises consumer awareness on the value and benefits of live indoor houseplants.
Emerging research also indicates that certain varieties of indoor houseplants work best to help cleanse interior spaces of indoor pollutants and improve productivity in offices where we spend most of our day. Plus, studies from the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have found that levels of indoor air pollution can be 2 to 5 times higher - and in some cases 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. Since most of Americans spend about 90 percent of our time indoors, these findings are particularly alarming.
This is where nature's natural air purifiers take center stage. Working 24/7, certain plants absorb almost all volatile organic compounds (VOC's) in indoor air. Some common VOC's include ammonia, formaldehyde and benzene. These toxins are emitted from products such as carpets, printer ink, tobacco smoke and cleaning products.
During National Indoor Plant Week and throughout the month of September, look for varieties such as peace lilies, ferns and palms with 'O2 for You' plant tags in our garden center and greenhouse and reap the benefits of these hard working plants.
