Abbey, Eric and family at the Cardinals game on 8-31-15
Dear Friends,

Isn't it hard to believe that September is upon us? I had the opportunity to go to the Cardinal game with my family last night. It was a brand new experience for my grandkids. They were a stitch and we had a blast. The short video below was Gabrielle during the 7th inning stretch. She outlasted both her older brother and sister.

September Top Tips

BULBS
*   Except tulips, spring bulbs may be planted as soon as they are available. Tulips should be kept in a cool, dark place and planted in late October - December.

HOUSEPLANTS
*   Begin readying houseplants for winter indoor. Prune back rampant growth and protruding roots. Check for pests and treat if necessary. Houseplants should be brought indoors at least one month before heat is normally turned on which would usually be the end of September or early October.
*   Poinsettias can be forced into bloom for Christmas. Move them into a room that will receive total darkness through the night and receive light only when there is natural light outside. This must continue until proper color is achieved in 6-10 weeks.

Selecting Shade Trees -
The Great Eight

There are several points to consider before selecting a shade tree for your yard. Following is a list of things to consider.

1. Size - Be sure to look into the full grown size of your shade tree. Will it fit well in the place you want to plant?

2. Location - You want your shade tree to do the most for you in the location you choose. You must also watch out for utilities such as power lines, under ground sewer lines etc.

3. Trees can also be planted to screen out unwanted views.

Bee on flowers - Botanical Interests SeedsIn the Garden -
Enjoying My Bee Garden
Blog by Judy from Botanical Interests Seeds

While my garden is my reprieve-a place to recharge-I like to share it with my sweet, bee friends, and at this time of year the garden is a-buzzzz with bees. I need these hard working, fuzzy heroes to pollinate. Did you know that there are over 4,000 native species of bees in North America? Talk about diversity! Some bees are generalists, like the European Honey Bee, collecting pollen from a number of various plants, while other bees are specialists, pollinating specific plants-like squash bees with squash and pumpkins.

Million Pollinator Garden Challenge
Million Pollinator Garden Challenge - millionpollinatorgardens.org

The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge is a campaign to register a million public and private gardens and landscapes to support pollinators. Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline. We know for certain, however, that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.
Here's how you can help! From individuals, to schools, community groups, and businesses - everyone can make a difference! BEE Counted! Add a photo of your garden or landscape to the S.H.A.R.E map on the MPGC website. Anyone and any size garden can join in our campaign to reach 1 million sites for pollinators!
