Dear Friends,

Wow we had fun at the fair!! Hope you all did as well. Below are pictures of the fun we had from our Nature's Best booth to the Clydesdales to the Edible bug making contest at the Family fun Center to the livestock auction. This fair is a benefit event for many non-profit organizations. We proudly sponsored events and items throughout the grounds. It was truly a good time had by all.
Now get the kids back to school and start those fall veggie gardens! Join me on Saturday, September 5th for the first of a NEW series called Coffee and Conversation. These 20-30 minute educational sessions will be held weekly beginning in Sept and go thru the year with timely tips and topics. They will always be held (with coffee) at 8:30 am. The first session is on "Fall Veggie Gardens...what to plant." So join me!

TURN SUMMER HARVESTS
INTO WINTER GOLD
By Sandi McDonald
Fruits and vegetables and methods of preserving them.
If your gardens are producing more than you can use, there is information available that can teach you how to preserve the bounty by canning, freezing or drying so you can enjoy the taste of summer in the middle of winter. Choosing the best method of preservation depends on the fruit or vegetable, the time you have to process it, and how you plan to use it in the future. Each has its pros and cons.
Freezing is one of the simplest options. It is ideal for most fruits and vegetables, and doesn't require special equipment other than freezer bags or containers. Its greatest drawback is the chance of losing the summer harvest if the power fails for an extended period.
Canning your fruits and vegetables gives you an easy-to-use end product that is immune to power outages. Additionally, home canning gives you greater latitude to control the ingredients in your food. It's a tried-and-true method, as long as you have the time for the process.

Successive Sowing: Extending Your Season and Maximizing Your Garden's Harvest
By Botanical Interests Seeds

One of the ways you can keep your garden going all season is by successive sowing. To achieve continuous harvesting, try:
Sowing two varieties with different days to maturity, (DTM,) each in their own garden area. This method is particularly helpful for crops you harvest only once (e.g., carrots, radish, corn).

Botanical Interests - Baby Little Finger seed pack front   Botanical Interests - Asian Kuroda Carrot seed pack front

For example, Botanical Interests' Baby Little Finger Carrots (57 DTM) can be sown in a different area but at the same time as their Asian Kuroda Carrots (75 DTM), producing two harvests, about 2 weeks apart, with one planting effort. (See the pictures).
Sowing more than one crop in one spot, each with different DTM so one is harvested earlier, making room for the second to mature (intercropping or companion planting).
By sowing radishes (30 DTM) with beets (60 DTM), you can harvest the early radishes, while at the same time allowing beets room to mature.
Staggering sowing dates of the same crop (intervals).
