It's time to get those kiddos ready for school and off to college. AND... IT IS TIME FOR FALL GARDENING! That's right! We will have fall vegetables coming into the store by Thursday of this week, just in time to redo those gardens that need help. I personally can't wait to add things to my garden spaces. I have enjoyed greens, onions, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers from my little garden patches this year. Perfect for my new salad eating style!

So stop on by!

Sandi

4 Reasons to Sow Perennial This Fall - Header graphic by Botanical Interests Seed Company

Gardeners know that their gardening efforts will reap the most rewards with perennial plants. In nature, perennials flower and produce seed, and then that seed is dispersed usually in summer or fall, germinating either in the fall or the following spring. Below are four reasons you will benefit from sowing perennials in fall.

1. Hassle-free stratification: Some perennial seeds remain dormant until after they experience the cold temperatures of winter. This need for cold to break a seed's dormancy is called stratification, and it prevents seeds from germinating at the wrong time. Take advantage of nature's process by sowing in the fall, or mimic winter conditions by putting moistened soil/media and seeds in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for 6 week before sowing them.

2. Earlier blooms and larger plants: Perennials live for more than two years and can take several years to get to their mature size. By sowing perennial seeds in the fall, plants will be more mature the following spring, allowing many types to flower their first growing season.

3. Care-free moisture management: Most regions have winter rain and/or snow, providing essential moisture at a time when most of us don't think to water. Cool weather also reduces the need to water as frequently.

4. Control weeds with ease: Cool weather slows weed germination and growth, making your nicely prepped and planted garden area easier to maintain.

MDC Offers Free Help With Native Plant Landscaping

News from the Kansas City region

Kansas City, Mo. - Late summer is a good time to see pollinator insects such as butterflies visiting flowers and plants. But habitat loss is causing an alarming decline in some species, including the beloved monarch butterfly. Planting native wildflowers in home garden plantings or as wildlife cover on rural acreages is a great way to help the pollinators.

Now is a good time to start planning for establishing pollinator-friendly wildflowers in acreages or in home landscaping, said Lisa Potter, private lands programs supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). For rural acreages, a fall herbicide application is often needed to remove competing vegetation before planting.

Adoptable cat, Crookshanks, from Franklin County Humane Society Featured Adoptable Pet

Hi There! My name is Crookshanks! I am named after a cat in the Harry Potter books, so you may have heard my name before! Unlike my namesake, I am a very playful, 4 month, old calico girl just looking for a good time. For example, I like to untie shoelaces if given the opportunity, and I am very curious about everything I see. I would love any kind of play you can provide for me. I have fun with the other kittens here, but I am most interested in a real home where I could have a cuddle buddy like you! If you adopt me, I will provide you a never-ending source of laughter and love. I'm waiting just for you!

       Love, Crookshanks
