Mosquitoes and Controlling Them
Mosquitoes - Adult, feeding and larvae

Mosquitoes are probably one of the more common, problematic and identifiable flying insects.

Adult mosquitoes feed on sugars from plants or from honeydew from other insects. That is all the males' diet consists of. Female mosquitoes also feed on blood in order to produce eggs. Most females feed during a certain time of the day (usually during low-light times of the day), although some may feed throughout the day.

Eggs hatch and become larvae, also known as "wigglers" or "wrigglers" due to the lashing movements of the abdomen. During this time, the larvae will go through four molts. Towards the end of the fourth molt, they become pupae. Then, they will emerge as adult mosquitoes.

Short-Season Vegetables

For many of us across the country, it has been a late spring this year. Don't fret! There are plenty of short-season vegetable varieties you can still grow.

A growing season is typically defined as the number of days between the last spring frost and the first fall frost. Any growing season of under 90 days could be considered a "short season." Short-season vegetables are a seedling of hope for frustrated gardeners-you're not as far behind as you think! Below are some of our favorite Botanical Interests short-season varieties! Visit us and check out the great selection of seeds available for you.

St. Louis Water Gardening Society's
2015 Pond-O-Rama

June 27 & 28, 9 am to 5 pm

A water garden picture from saintlouiswatergardeningsociety.org

The St. Louis Water Gardening Society will present its 15th annual water garden and pond tour, Pond-O-Rama, Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The 2015 self-directed tour includes over 40 private gardens, each owned and maintained by Society members, located throughout the St. Louis metropolitan and Metro East areas. The water features range from spectacular high, thundering waterfalls to quiet streams, some "over the top," some small and private. There are pondless waterfalls that simply disappear at the termination of the falls, and a number of new rain-recovery systems that make the storage and use of rainfall practical. Some owners have enhanced their ponds and gardens into outdoor rooms and quaint woodland spaces. This year you can expect to see some unique and creative designs in waterfalls and ponds, gorgeous koi fish, and fantastic gardens.

Million Pollinator Garden Challenge

Million Pollinator Garden Challenge - millionpollinatorgardens.org

The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge is a campaign to register a million public and private gardens and landscapes to support pollinators. Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline. We know for certain, however, that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.

Here's how you can help! From individuals, to schools, community groups, and businesses - everyone can make a difference! BEE Counted! Add a photo of your garden or landscape to the S.H.A.R.E map on the MPGC website. Anyone and any size garden can join in our campaign to reach 1 million sites for pollinators!
