Patty's Perennial Picks for the Shade
By Patty Lynch, Plant Buyer
Don't you just love the shade on sunny summer days? Some may think that it is hard to grow attractive plants in the shade. Although, you can have beautiful gardens in shady spots. These plants will actually thrive in your shady garden. They are available in a virtually limitless selection of sizes, shapes & colors.
Aralia Sun King - This hardy, tropical looking golden beauty will brighten up the shade garden. It emerges with bright golden leaves on contrasting reddish colored stems. If it is given a few hours of sunlight, it will remain golden yellow all summer, in heavier shade it will be more lime green in color. Tiny white flowers in mid - late summer followed by deep purplish black berries. This plant is also deer resistant and attracts honeybees.
Astilbe - These beauties produce mounds of fern like foliage...

Million Pollinator Garden Challenge
The Million Pollinator Garden Challenge is a campaign to register a million public and private gardens and landscapes to support pollinators. Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline. We know for certain, however, that more nectar and pollen sources provided by more flowering plants and trees will help improve their health and numbers. Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.
Here's how you can help! From individuals, to schools, community groups, and businesses - everyone can make a difference! BEE Counted! Add a photo of your garden or landscape to the S.H.A.R.E map on the MPGC website. Anyone and any size garden can join in our campaign to reach 1 million sites for pollinators!

Tomato Plant Quirks
Sometimes a tomato doesn't turn out looking like you'd expect. Here are some common tomato quirks you might see that are caused by neither insects nor diseases - and what (if anything) you should do about them.

Oddly shaped fruit. Also called catfacing, this has nothing do with cats; the word describes puckering or misshapen fruit. It can happen to strawberries and tomatoes exposed to temperatures below 50 degrees when in bloom or setting fruit. The cool weather interferes with pollination and can cause the blossom to stick to the developing fruit, which keeps part of the fruit from developing. Meanwhile, another part does develop, so you end up with weird-looking and scarred fruit. It is most common on large-fruited types.

Cicada - Information and Control
Cicadas can be present in many areas of the country, they are a flying, plant sucking insect that emerges in periodic cycles called broods.
Periodic Cicadas emerge in a 13 or 17 year cycle. Visit http://www.cicadamania.com/where.html for a map. The adults have red to orange eyes, will be 1 to 1½ inches and emerge in late May or early June by the millions. (Top picture)
Annual Cicadas, aka dog day cicada, emerge every 2 to 5 years, although there is a brood almost every year. These are up to 2 inches long and have dark eyes and green bodies, they emerge in the "dog days" of summer, July or August. (Second picture)

St. Louis Water Gardening Society's
2015 Pond-O-Rama
June 27 & 28, 9 am to 5 pm
The St. Louis Water Gardening Society will present its 15th annual water garden and pond tour, Pond-O-Rama, Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The 2015 self-directed tour includes over 40 private gardens, each owned and maintained by Society members, located throughout the St. Louis metropolitan and Metro East areas. The water features range from spectacular high, thundering waterfalls to quiet streams, some "over the top," some small and private. There are pondless waterfalls that simply disappear at the termination of the falls, and a number of new rain-recovery systems that make the storage and use of rainfall practical. Some owners have enhanced their ponds and gardens into outdoor rooms and quaint woodland spaces. This year you can expect to see some unique and creative designs in waterfalls and ponds, gorgeous koi fish, and fantastic gardens.

Tickets are available to purchase in our Garden Center.
