Why Every Backyard Counts Technology, as we all know, dominates much of our lives. Computers are wonderful, but no amount of gigabytes can duplicate the sight of a male cardinal offering a seed tidbit to his mate. No television program can be more real than a robin building her nest. And, no website can capture the nuanced sights and sounds of your backyard oasis. By creating bird friendly backyards, we move to slow a trend of habitat destruction, helping make up for the loss. The need is acute as land is cleared for housing, office complexes and shopping centers, natural areas are shrinking, but good habitat can be an island amid development. Click here for more.

Pollinator Partnership - www.pollinator.org 1. Plant for Pollinators * Habitat opportunities abound on every landscape - from window boxes to acres of farms to corporate campuses to utility and roadside corridors - every site can be habitat. * Utilize plants native to your area (or at the least, non-invasive for your area). * Utilize the BeeSmart Pollinator Gardener App or the Ecoregional Planting Guides available on the pollinator.org website. Decide among the plant material options - seeds, plugs, plants or a combination. * Know your soil type and select appropriate plant material. * Plant in clusters to create a "target' for pollinators to find. * Plant for continuous bloom throughout the growing season from spring to fall. * Select a site that is removed from wind, has at least partial sun, and can provide water. * Allow material from dead branches and logs remain as nesting sites; reduce mulch to allow patches of bare ground for ground-nesting bees to utilize; consider installing wood nesting blocks for wood-nesting natives. Japanese Beetles
As frightening as these little bugs can be, if they were not so destructive - their distinctive iridescent luster makes them almost "pretty." Numerous phone calls, reporting their return have been coming in. The question is almost always the same. "How do we make them go away?" Japenese Beetles are the adult stage of the White Grub, which can destroy your lawn. The adults will devour your treasured plants. The best defense is the eradication of the grubs by using a season long Grub Killer or by applying the beneficial product Milky Spore.
Milky Spore, once established can keep your lawn grub free for 15-20 years, AND, it's organic.
To alleviate the adult pests from your prize rose bushes or fruit trees, Japenese Beetle traps are available to safely lure them away. This organic trap uses a Pheromone to attract them to the trap in which they cannot escape. This stops the life cycle of the beetle. So, consider Milky Spore or Japanese Beetle traps and come visit us for help.

St. Louis Water Gardening Society's
2015 Pond-O-Rama
June 27 & 28, 9 am to 5 pm
The St. Louis Water Gardening Society will present its 15th annual water garden and pond tour, Pond-O-Rama, Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The 2015 self-directed tour includes over 40 private gardens, each owned and maintained by Society members, located throughout the St. Louis metropolitan and Metro East areas. The water features range from spectacular high, thundering waterfalls to quiet streams, some "over the top," some small and private. There are pondless waterfalls that simply disappear at the termination of the falls, and a number of new rain-recovery systems that make the storage and use of rainfall practical. Some owners have enhanced their ponds and gardens into outdoor rooms and quaint woodland spaces. This year you can expect to see some unique and creative designs in waterfalls and ponds, gorgeous koi fish, and fantastic gardens.

Tickets are available to purchase in our Garden Center.
