Dear Friends,

Thank you Veterans graphic with a picture of Bernie Hillermann (Korean War Veteran)        It is hard to believe the kids will be out of school soon and summer is fast approaching. These subjects come to mind as Memorial Day draws near. With that said, I want to take a moment to honor our service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and say thank you to all Veterans and current enlisted for their service above and beyond duty. May God bless America!

We will be open all weekend... Saturday: 8:00 - 5:00, Sunday and Memorial Day Monday: 9:00 - 5:00). There is still plenty of time to plant and we have lots of colorful plants available. Enjoy nature all around you, and spend time outside.

Sandi

Why Birds Sing

By Sandi McDonald

As we move into the spring, the longer days trigger more and more singing behavior from the birds. Resident birds start singing in Feb and March. In April and May, returning breeders add to the chorus. Some birds that only migrate through mid-Missouri may sing as they travel too. While adding to the atmosphere of the backyard, the singing behavior also helps birdwatchers locate birds that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Males do the most singing, with the primary function being to establish and defend their feeding and nesting territories. The singing behavior also helps them to attract a mate for nesting, so singing is most intense during the spring.

Peony bloom at Hillermann Nursery and Florist
Peony
Perhaps the best-loved perennials, herbaceous peonies belong in almost every garden. Their sumptuous flowers -- single, semidouble, anemone centered or Japanese, and fully double -- in glorious shades of pinks and reds as well as white and yellow announce that spring has truly arrived. The handsome fingered foliage is usually dark green and remains good-looking all season long. Provide deep rich soil with plenty of humus to avoid dryness, and don't plant the crowns more than 2 inches beneath the surface. But these are hardly fussy plants. Where well suited to the climate, they can thrive on zero care.

Tread Lightly for Turtles!

Turtles will be moving around around and on roads about this time each year. It is a good idea to slow down and check to make sure you can safely steer around them. Turtles are at special risk at this time of year, when they are moving around looking for mates and establishing home ranges. They will also walk out onto asphalt to warm in the sun on cool spring days.

Below is a great article from Missouri Department of Conservation from 2014 that we just wanted to share with you again.

Turtle Alert -

MDC News Release from 2014

By Jim Low

JEFFERSON CITY-Have you ever seen a turtle trying to cross a busy highway and wondered how many die under the wheels of automobiles each year? Jeff Briggler has, and as Missouri's state herpetologist, the answer worries him.

Briggler and other workers at the Missouri Department of Conservation have made informal observations over the years, counting the number of dead turtles - especially box turtles - on stretches of highway.

"We discovered that mortality rates are very high on high-traffic roads," says Briggler, "whereas mortalities are much lower on less-traveled roads."
