Perennial Plant of the Week heading graphic

Coreopsis plant with blooms

Coreopsis

This perennial plant is superb in the border. Reliable, long blooming daisy-like flowers are produced from early summer into fall. Blooms are mostly yellow, but are sometimes available in pink or other light colors. Coreopsis naturalize with ease and will attract lots of butterflies and birds to your garden. Bright and cheery, they make great cut flowers. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Multiplies readily and can be divided every few years as new growth develops in spring.

Monarch Butterflies Could Use Your Help

By Tim Smith, Missouri Department of Conservation

Caterpillar on Butterfly weed plant

The sight of a beautiful orange and black monarch butterfly in Missouri is likely to be less common this year, but you may be able to help the ones that do arrive here. A January 2014 report from their overwintering forest areas in Mexico indicated that only 1.65 acres were occupied by monarchs this winter. That makes this the third straight year of steep declines. The overwintering areas have been monitored since 1993 and the largest occupied area was 45 acres in 1996.

Peony bloom at Hillermann Nursery and Florist

Peonies

Perhaps the best-loved perennials, herbaceous peonies belong in almost every garden. Their sumptuous flowers in glorious shades of pinks and reds as well as white and yellow announce that spring has truly arrived. The handsome fingered foliage is usually dark green and remains good-looking all season long. Provide deep rich soil with plenty of humus to avoid dryness, and don't plant the crowns more than 2 inches beneath the surface. But these are hardly fussy plants. Where well suited to the climate, they can thrive on zero care.

Create a Container Masterpiece at Hillermann's Potting Station

Items ready for planting a container garden at Hillermann Nursery

Hillermann's Potting Station is OPEN in our greenhouse. We are well stocked with containers of all styles and colors. Our custom blend potting soil is ready to scoop and everything you need is within reach. Our helpful designers will be on hand to lend one if you need it. Bring your containers, choose one of ours, or try a new container garden to go. Be our guest; the mess is ours to clean.

Planting Tips: Select your container. Gather plants you love for their color, scent and exposure (sun or shade). Use plants with similar light and water requirements. Fill your container with good quality potting mix. Decide your viewing angle to determine whether your container will be up against a wall or be seen from all sides. Experiment with your plants using the Thriller, Spiller, Filler guide (ask us for details). Remove plants from pots by gently cradling plant, tipping the container and kneading the plastic container as you go. Gently rough up the roots to give them air. Plant the crown (where the stem meets the roots) slightly above the soil level for better plant health, which means more blooms! Add decorative moss and/or mulch as a finishing touch and to seal in moisture. Let us know when you're done. We can help carry your masterpiece to the checkout and to your car.

Getting Dirty Can Be Good

Girl planting in the garden

Getting dirty isn't all bad! Get your kids and grand-kids out to help and learn with you in the garden. We found this interesting article on Parents.com and wanted to share it with you.

The Dirty Truth

Playing in the soil may deliver more than just good unclean fun. According to what scientists call "the hygiene hypothesis," our society's overemphasis on cleanliness may block our exposure to beneficial bugs. The trillions of microorganisms that live inside us (including ones we pick up from our environment) "are doing something important for us," says Dr. Dorothy Matthews, a professor at The Sage Colleges. "Especially the ones in our gastrointestinal tract, where most of our immune response happens."

Mason bee house

How to Build a Bee House

"Bee Houses" provide cover and places to raise young for bees. They're easy and fun to make, or can be purchased commercially from several vendors.

The Orchard Mason Bee is a wonderful little creature. It does not live in a nest like other bees; it lives in wooden blocks, but does not drill holes and destroy wooden items like other bees. It uses holes that are already available. The male Orchard Mason Bee can not sting and the female rarely stings.

How to build a bee house:

  • With drill bits of various sizes (5/16th of an inch works best for Mason bees) simply take some scrap lumber and drill holes 3 to 5 inches deep but not all the way through the wood block.
