We are giving away FREE Redbud Tree Seedlings!

Bird of the Week photo and text graphic.

Tufted titmouse birds on a branch Tufted Titmouse

Basics: The large black eyes, small round bill, and pointed crest atop its head make this bird easily identified. It's call sounds like a whistled, "Peter-Peter-Peter".

Housing: The Tufted Titmouse does not like living in nest boxes. They prefer to reside in natural cavities that may either be holes abandoned by woodpeckers or naturally occurring crevices in tree trunks.

Food: This bird enjoys both sunflower seeds and suet and will eat out of a platform feeder.

How to Attract: Offer a source of flowing water, smear peanut butter onto tree trunks and branches

Fact: Tufted Titmice have a remarkable alarm call which is a loud scold that fades off as if the bird is moving into the distance. This may fool predators into chasing the phantom bird call while the titmouse stays safely hidden.

Tip: Try a feeder with nothing but black oil sunflower seeds. It will hold the attention of several species and will always keep chickadee and titmouse activity going, which attracts other species to the yard and feeder.

Houseplant of the Week - picture of a houseplant with text graphic
Fern plant in the greenhouse at Hillermann Nursery & Florist

  Fern

We are excited to announce that the houseplant of the week is the Fern. Bracken is the most common of this genus. The uses of this fern range from decorative to health purposes. This plant contains vitamin A, C, and Niacin. These plants need humidity, abundant water, light, and plant food. Though there are several thousands species of fern, basic tips for care and maintenance is the same for all variations. Ferns are a popular leafy plant that can add texture to any garden or can open up a room in any home. All fern have fronds, which are large, divided leaves. On these fronds are the fern's spores, which allows for fern reproduction. These fronds are an essential aspect of fern growth and require particular attention when growing your fern plant.

Location: Ferns are known as shade-tolerant plants that grow best when placed in diffused sunlight. The fern's fronds are very fragile and if placed in direct sunlight for extended periods of time may wilt or burn. Ferns also thrive when their leaves receives a sufficient amount of moisture so high humidity areas are actually beneficial. If your home or garden is in a drier area, don't worry; your fern will still grow beautifully if watered properly. Also, make sure you leave enough area surrounding your seeding for your fronds to grow. If grown in a crowded or tight area, your fern will grow poorly.

Soil and Watering: Another important aspect of fern care is damp soil. Soil that is consistently moist and drained provides the best growing opportunity. Water your fern whenever the soil appears dry. If growing fern in a pot, make sure you add holes to the bottom of the pot for better drainage and make sure that drainage is discarded regularly. If it is not cleared often then the root will rot and the fern will die. It is also a good idea to mist your fern's leaves once or twice a week, especially if you live in an area with low humidity.

Fertilizer: Ferns require little use of fertilizer. Applying fertilizer once every two months is more than enough.

Deep Root Feeding

 Deep Root Feeding Graphic

The winter cold has been hard on many trees and shrubs. Disease, insects and elements in the previous seasons may have also stressed trees and shrubs. Give them a boost and ensure that they have a healthy start in spring by giving them food right to their roots. This is something you can do yourself - or call us to do the job for you.

Call us at 636-239-6729 for more information.

VegiBee Sonic Garden Pollinators available at Hillermann Nursery and Florist

VegiBee Garden Pollinators

The VegiBee Garden Pollinators were designed to dramatically improve the productivity of the home food garden. VegiBee Garden Pollinators are ideal for use on all tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas and eggplant. These self-pollinating plants possess the "perfect flower", containing both the male and female reproductive parts in the same flower. VegiBee helps to overcome low crop yields in these plants, caused by shrinking bee populations and home gardens sheltered from the wind.

The Vegibee Garden Pollinators use sonic vibrations to shake the pollen out of the flower. The VegiBee pollinating system adds a pollen spoon to capture all of the released pollen so that additional flowers on the same vegetable plant can be pollinated. This simple extra step will improve the yield in your garden by 30% or more.

VegiBee is a small investment for a very big yield in your home garden. There is two e VegiBee Garden Pollinators available including a 5 speed rechargeable unit that retails for $49.99 and an express battery powered unit that retails for $29.99.
