Get Ready to Spring Into Nesting Season

A great way to use this extra time inside during the winter is to get all of your backyard bird items ready for spring. Use this time to clean your hummingbird and oriole feeders to make sure you catch these visitors on the first pass through. I always find myself scrambling around Tax Day searching and digging for my hummingbird feeders, making sure they are cleaned and ready to go. Pick up any new nesting and feeding items you'd like to have for your feathered visitors this spring from the great selection in our garden center. We can help you choose items to suit the needs of your favorite types of birds.

Winter is a great time to get the kids involved and there are many inside activities to do involving birding. Times in the past of assembling and putting together a birdhouse with my Grandpa Hillermann were memorable. You can easily use a pattern or a kit to build new birdhouses. Grab some paint and brushes and let your kids or grandkids decorate the outside to give it his or her own special touch. Then you can put up your houses out when the weather breaks and be ready for nesting season. Stop by and check out all of our birding items!

White Breasted Nuthatch

White Breasted Nuthatch

Basics: The Upside-down bird! This species often walks upside down on tree trunks and branches. These birds have clean black, gray, and white markings.

Housing: These birds typically nest in a natural tree cavity or in an old woodpecker hole, although they may use a birdhouse.

Food: Offer large nuts such as sunflower and peanuts, and put out bird suet.

How to attract: Offer the foods mentioned above, water, shelter and nesting sites.

Fact: With a little patience you can get nuthatches to eat from your hand. Let them get used to you by a feeder, then hold out your hand with sunflower seeds in it.

Tip: They can be quite aggressive at feeders. With wings spread they will swing from side to side to keep other birds away.

Houseplant of the Week - picture of a houseplant with text graphic

Peace Lily plant Peace Lily

This week we're happy to present the Peace Lily as the houseplant of the week. This plant requires indirect sunlight, heavy watering, leaf misting, and trimming of unhealthy leaves on the plant. The peace Lily topped the list for removing all three of most common VOCs - formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. This plant is awesome for promoting cleaner air, indoors! The basic Peace Lily Care tips below are followed by pruning, propagating and problem-solving this widely available plant. Since you can create one or two new plants yearly from an initial Peace Lily plant, it's cost-effective to provide the plant's minimum requirements.

Placement: Since east windows allow direct sun rays and south windows allow indirect, but all day, light in consider putting the plant in a room that's north or west facing instead. This is not to say the plant should be right on a window sill. Keeping the Peace Lily six to eight feet away from a window helps keep light levels consistent as well.

Reading a Seed Packet

There is a lot of information contained on a seed packet, and it can be overwhelming to know what to look for when purchasing, but Botanical Interests' seed packets make it easy. Consider these four things when choosing a variety-when it blooms, how much sun it needs, how big it gets, and days to harvest. You'll find that information listed on the front of the packet right above a brief description of why you are going to love this variety.

Botanical Interests seed packet back. Seeds available at Hillermann Nursery and Florist        Once you have your packets home, the back of the packet gives you more specific sowing information. We recommend sowing based on your average last frost date and whether to start sowing indoors or outdoors. When you're ready to plant, cutout the plant tag and secure it to a garden stake. The tag tells you the number of days before seedlings emerge, how deep to sow seeds into the soil, the distance between seeds, and recommended thinning instructions. The reverse side of the plant tag shows a visual of the seedling to help you identify it when it emerges.

Botanical Interests seed packet inside information. Seeds available at Hillermann Nursery and Florist        Now your seeds are planted, but there's still more information inside the packet! The inside explains optimal growing conditions, such as how often to water and when to transplant, as well as harvesting methods. Often, our seed packets also include the history of the plant, recipes, and tips on keeping your cut flowers and harvested vegetables fresh.

Having the right information is the first step in being a successful home gardener! Come look at all of our beautifully illustrated, information packed, and high quality flower, herb and vegetable seed packets from Botanical Interests Seed Company - a family owned business!
