Get together with your family and create an awesome ornament for your tree! This handmade ornament will last for years!

Hand-made winter scene ornament

This ornament lets kids assemble miniature figurines and novelty items into magical "through the looking glass" scenes.

What you'll need:
  • 9-ounce clear plastic cup
  • Silver poster board
  • Pinking shears or decorative craft scissors
  • Polyester batting
  • Miniature trees (sold in craft stores; try the dollhouse or model railroad section)
  • Miniature animals or people (sold in craft stores or online at BJCRAFTSUPPLIES.COM)
  • 1-inch-wide mirror
  • Tacky glue
  • Fine glitter
  • Pushpin
  • Monofilament
  • Several craft beads

How to make it:

Ornament making, diagram of cutting base

 1.  Trace the rim of the cup onto the underside of the poster board. Cut out the circle, but stay at least 1/8 inch outside the trace line so the base will be slightly larger than the cup.

  2.  Cut out a circle of batting snow that's the same diameter as the cup and set it atop the shiny side of the poster board circle.

Ornament making diagram, placing items on base

3.  Separate or snip the batting where you'd like to position the trees, figurines, and mirror pond. Glue the base of each item to the poster board, then smooth or fluff the snow around them as needed. Sprinkle the scene with fine glitter.

4.  Use the pushpin to poke a hole in the center of the cup bottom. Thread a craft bead onto a 12-inch length of monofilament. Gather the ends together, letting the bead fall to the center of the line, and thread them up through the hole from inside the cup. String a few more beads onto the doubled line (outside the cup) and then knot the ends to form a loop.

5.  Apply a line of glue along the edge of the poster board circle. Press the cup, upside down, atop the glue and hold it in place for 20 seconds or so. During the first 10 minutes of drying time, occasionally check the seal and press down gently on the cup, if required. Let the glue cure for a full day before hanging the ornament.

  FUN FACTS!

 Christmas nativity scene clip art

Christmas is an annual Christian Holiday held on December 25th celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas trees are also known as the Yule-tree.

Christmas trees are evergreen trees, usually either a fir tree, pine tree or spruce tree.

It is believed that decorating Christmas trees originated in 16th century Germany when Christians would bring decorated trees into their homes.

In 1836 Alabama became the first state in the US to declare Christmas a legal holiday.

Oklahoma became the last state to declare Christmas a legal holiday in 1907.

In June of 1970 Christmas became a federal holiday in the US.

Christmas trees were first decorated with foods such as apples, nuts and dates.

In the 18th century Christmas trees began being decorated with candles.

Electric Christmas tree lights were first used in 1895.

Did you know that giving presents were once banned by the Catholic Church? It was believed that gift giving was connected to paganism.

If you received all the gifts from the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" you would have 364 presents.

Do you know why we say the Twelve Days of Christmas? It is believed that it took the 3 kings 12 days to find baby Jesus.

The song Jingle Bells was written by James Pierpont in 1857. It was originally called "One Horse Open Sleigh" and was made for Thanksgiving.

Many years ago in England a traditional Christmas dinner included a pig head served with mustard.

The tradition of naughty children getting a lump of coal in their stocking comes from Italy.

Did you know that tinsel was once made of real silver! It was invented in Germany in 1610.

There are two islands named Christmas, Christmas Island (formerly Kiritimati) in the Pacific Ocean and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.

The tallest Christmas tree ever displayed was in Seattle Washington in 1950. The Christmas tree was 221 feet tall!

It is said that candy canes were invented by a candy maker in Indiana. He wanted to use them to spread the name Jesus around the world.

Santa Claus is also known as St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, Grandfather Frost and Kris Kringle.

Santa is believed to bring gifts to good girls and boys on the night before Christmas (December 24th).

There are 3 towns in the Us that are named Santa Claus. One in Georgia, one in Arizona and one in Indiana.

Santa Claus' eight reindeer are named: Comet, Cupid, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Donner Blitzen.

In the story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Rudolph was added as a ninth reindeer to lead the team through winter weather.
