Dear Friends,
All the signs are here - the odd mix of weather, our first freeze & even Daylight Savings Time - the winter months will soon be here. But, I'm not worried. Potted herbs line the kitchen window. There's a terrarium on the dining room table & tropical plants in the living room so I can reconnect with warm days spent in the garden. You too can find great ideas for indoor garden favorites among our fresh arrivals - just scroll down!
We look forward to seeing you in the nursery!

Pruning - Wait Until Trees Are Dormant
While you may be tempted to clean up your yard by trimming trees and shrubs, now is not the time.
* Pruning stimulates new growth, which cannot be adequately supported with the falling temperatures and daylight.
* Any spring-flowering tree or shrub should not be pruned until after blooming next spring. These plants usually set their buds in fall - pruning now will mean no flowers in the spring!
* Pruning creates wounds, which can invite pests and diseases, such as Oak Wilt. Pruning while bugs are dormant can prevent infestations while the tree is vulnerable.
* The best time to prune a tree is in late winter, just before the tree breaks dormancy. The cut will heal quickly during vigorous growth in early spring.
* Do not prune in spring while the tree's buds are developing. If the buds are beginning to swell, leave the tree alone until the leaves have grown to their mature size.

Water Garden Winterizing
Water gardens and ponds add beauty, tranquil sounds and a refuge for wildlife in your garden. As winter approaches, it is important to prepare the pond for the cold temperatures ahead. With a deep enough pond and the right preparations, your fish should be able to survive in the pond through winter.
The most important task in the fall is keeping the pond clean of debris and dead or dying plant material. Nets placed over the pond can collect leaves and other flying or falling debris and make disposing of them easier than if they get into the pond. Some debris will collect in the pond and must be cleaned out as much as possible. A pond vacuum or leaf eater makes this job easier. A leaf net or physically removing the debris are other options. Keep in mind that the later it gets, the colder the water will get!
As water plant material dies, cut it back so it will not reach the water. Stop all fertilization of plants and remove tropical plants before the first frost. Hardy water lilies may remain in the pond for the winter.

'The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago.
The next best time is now.' - Chinese Proverb
Even though many trees have dropped most of their leaves, it is still a good time to plant them. The roots can grow until the ground freezes and then again as the ground thaws in spring. This way, trees will become better established before the harsh heat and drought of summer arrives.
A new shipment of containerized shade trees has just arrived at Hillermann's! Come and let us help you choose a tree for your location and needs.

Composting
Using compost is a great natural way to enrich and improve the soil in your landscape beds and gardens. There is a very informative article on composting on the University of Missouri Extension website. We would like to share it with you.
Making and Using Compost
University of Missouri Extension Center
Compost is partially decomposed organic matter. It is dark and easily crumbled and has an earthy aroma. It is created by biological processes in which soil-inhabiting organisms break down plant tissue. When decomposition is complete, compost has turned to a dark-brown powdery material called humus. The processes occurring in a compost pile are similar to those that break down organic matter in soil. However, decomposition occurs much more rapidly in the compost pile because the environment can be made ideal for the microbes to do their work

Plant a Layered Bulb Container Garden
Many bulbs can be combined to create lovely container gardens. These containers are ideal for balconies and patios, next to your door or even indoors. The secret is to plant your bulbs in layers inside the container. This layering method is also called 'sandwich-system'. Choose the species which will flower a few weeks after each other and you will get a pot that continues to flower for almost two months.
You should choose a container that is sufficiently wide and deep. 10 inches high is a nice size. Place gravel (or a medium to promote drainage) on the bottom of the container to help drain excess water. Then apply a layer of soil. The first layer of bulbs consists of the tallest and latest flowering type.
