You'll Love Them and Deer Hate Them
Let's face it. Deer are cute, but not when they've eaten all the flowers you were waiting so anxiously to see. Here is some spring flowering bulbs that you can plant now and deer will leave them alone.

Allium - Great for planting in small groups in borders in full sun to light shade. They make a long lasting cut flower. Cover with straw or mulch in winter.
Grape Hyacinths - These little beauties work well for naturalizing in borders, rockeries, woodland, between shrubs and between paving stones. Also good in tubs on a terrace or balcony. Best in full sun or partial shade.
Daffodils - there are many varieties to choose from. They are well known for not being bothered by animals. Plant them in full sun to part shade. You will be able to enjoy these cheerful beauties for many springs to come.

Creating Winter Interest in the Garden
As fall colors fade and temperatures start to lower, there are still many plants to enjoy in the garden. Gardening in the Midwest should not be a three-season hobby; it should fill you with enjoyment all year round. In order to appreciate the winter garden you must observe the subtle beauty of nature and what interest it can provide. Imagine the Pin Oak's resilient leaves, the sparkling, ice-covered berries of Holly and Viburnum, the graceful shape of a Japanese Maple, and the curling bark of the River Birch. The following list of plants will help complete your landscape with four season interest and enjoyment.
Evergreens - look for differences in shape, foliage/needle color and texture.
Abies-Fir
Buxus-Boxwood
Cedrus atlantica-Blue Atlas Cedar

Landscaping - Accenting With Light

Autumn is here and with it, comes cooler nights and less light. Have you noticed that your lovely landscape is dark when you go to work? Soon it will also be dark when you return home at night. What if there was a way to present your home and landscape as the highlight of your neighborhood? There is a way, and we call it "accenting with light".
The purpose of lighting your landscape is to enhance your home while adding security. A well lit home is a deterrent to prowlers. So, let us begin by looking at the method of accenting with light and the products we use to get the job done.
Neighboring properties impact the view of your home and how it presents itself to the viewer. During daylight, you can't control the background, but at night, the background disappears when light is added to the foreground.

Improve Your Soil by Raking Less
If you dread the annual fall leaf-raking marathon, I have good news for you: Raking and collecting leaves every autumn is a tradition without scientific basis. Research has proven that mowing leaves into your lawn can improve its vigor, and observation shows that unraked leaves in planting beds don't smother shade-tolerant perennials.
Based upon research at several universities, the organic matter and nutrients from leaves mown into lawn areas has been proven to improve turf quality. The tests resulted in improved soil and healthy lawns with few remnant leaves visible the following spring.
You can achieve similar results if you set your mower to cut at 3 inches, and mow at least once a week during peak leaf fall when your lawn reaches a height of 4 inches. Leaves shred most efficiently when slightly damp, so mow after a light dew. If you follow these simple guidelines, you will never rake another leaf and improve the quality of your soil.

Seasonal Products Spotlight
"Chap Stick" For Broadleaf Evergreens
If you find yourself reaching for Chap Stick because your lips feel dry, then it may be time to treat your broadleaf evergreens with an anti-desiccant spray like "Wilt Stop." This simple spray will prevent evergreens like holly, boxwood, magnolia, azaleas, rhododendrons, and laurel from losing foliar moisture during the dry, windy winter season. This wax-like protectant will help reduce leaf loss and winter burn. Apply in mid-late fall and again in January when the weather permits. It is available in the garden center in a 40 oz spray bottle for $12.99.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Protect Against Insects That Want to Move In
As temperatures get cooler and days are shorter, spiders and insects like to find a way into our homes for shelter. If you've ever known anyone bitten by a brown recluse spider, you'll know that bite is not a pleasant experience. Hi-Yield's DIY Insect Control is a combination of a quick kill and a residual of up to 7 months on certain insects. It is available in the garden center in a 14 oz. spray can for $10.49.
