Dear Friends, As you are reading this, Scott and I are in Chicago at the nation's largest independent garden center trade show. I can't wait to see what we find. Below is a couple of pictures of some showy surprise lilies I spotted in town. The SURPRISE LILIES (also known as Naked Ladies) are blooming beautifully now all over the area. Watch for these beauties to arrive in our garden center with the fall bulbs in a couple of short weeks. Plant them in October.
On a more somber note, I wish to ask for prayers for our youngest family member. Landon Holmes (grandson of Christine, our sister) who is 8 months old, has been diagnosed (95%+) with a 5" cancerous tumor that has consumed the majority of his liver. The attached photos are of Landon and his family at Children's Hospital. You will also see photos of the healing garden that is on the eighth floor rooftop at the Hospital. It is very peaceful and wonderful. Sarah and Chris have found solace there to sort through thoughts and pray. A biopsy went well on Monday. We have to wait for results now to find out what type of cancer it is. That will decide what actions need to be taken next. Click here to view the photo album. Your prayers are appreciated.

Succulents - Some Like It Hot

Succulents are booming in popularity for two simple reasons: they are beautiful and nearly indestructible. Technically, a succulent is any plant with thick, fleshy (succulent) water storage organs. Succulents store water in their leaves, their stems or their roots. Cacti are a unique subset of the succulent group. Succulents make excellent display plants in dish gardens. No matter what kind of succulent you're growing, the rules are pretty similar between the different species. Here are the general rules for growing top-quality succulents:
Light: Succulents prefer bright light, such as found on a south-facing window. Full sun outdoors in spring and summer are also preferred, but you must slowly acclimate your plant to full outdoor conditions.
