!!BUG ALERT: JAPANESE BEETLES!!
Japanese Beetle on a leaf

As frightening as these little boogers can be, if they weren't so destructive- their distinctive iridescent luster makes them almost "pretty". Numerous phone calls, reporting their return have been coming in. The question is almost always the same. "How do we get rid of them"? Japanese Beetles are the adult stage of the White Grub which can destroy your lawn. The adults will devour your treasured plants. The best defense is the eradication of the grubs by using a season long Grub Killer or by applying the beneficial product Milky Spore. Milky Spore, once established can keep your lawn grub free for 15-20 years, AND, it's organic.

To alleviate the adult pests from your prize rose bushes or fruit trees, Japenese Beetle traps are available to safely lure them away. This organic trap uses a Pheromone to attract them to the trap in which they cannot escape. This stops the life cycle of the beetle. Also, you can spray with a product called Eight (improved Sevin) and contains Permethrin. This will also kill them. So, consider Milky Spore, Japanese Beetle traps, or Eight insecticide and come visit us for help.

Fireblight - What Can I Do?

Fireblight has gone crazy this spring. We have received many requests for advice about damaged trees. It is a serious disease of apple and pear trees. The disease can also affect ornamental pear (including Bradford and Cleveland varieties), cotoneaster, crabapple, hawthorne, mountain ash, firethorn, plum quince and spiraea. Fireblight, caused by the blight bacterium Erwinia amylovora, can affect many parts of a susceptible plant but generally noticed first on damaged leaves.

Watch a video by University of Missouri Extension Horticulture Specialist, Nathan Brandt, on how to handle fireblight by clicking the image below.

'Bradford' and other ornamental pears have been very heavily hit. These are less-desirable species anyway, so this year's disease is a good excuse to replace them. Visit us for help in selecting a replacement to suit your needs. Note the location, the sun exposure and the soil drainage of the location where you will be planting.
