Beat the Heat with Extreme Plants
By Patty Lynch
The dog days of summer here in the Midwest can remind one of the Sahara. Yet, some plants refuse to be taken down by Mother Nature. You could call them the Ultimate fighters of the horticulture world. These plants have stood the test of time and have been selected not only because they are hardy and easy to grow, but because they can withstand hot, dry summers better than most others. It also helps to choose plants native to our area because they adapt to changing climate conditions. Besides selecting drought tolerant plants, consider the soil. Conditioning the soil with organic matter helps to retain moisture.
The following is a list of drought & heat tolerant (once established) perennials, trees, & shrubs...
Perennials
Baptisia - Blue indigo flower spikes in spring on shrub like plant 3-4' tall x 3-4' wide. Seed pods turn black in fall. Attracts butterflies.

Less Work, More Play with easy-care plants
Low-maintenance flowers, foliage mean less work, more play
The desire for low-maintenance landscapes just keeps growing. At the same time, Americans' love for outdoor amenities like fire pits, grills, dining areas and seating shows no signs of waning.
So combining the two should mean less work and more play, right? Here, we suggest fuss-free flowers and foliage for outdoor living.
Whether you're relaxing during a private moment in your personal sanctuary or are hosting a dinner party, you don't want to come out to a tired, ailing landscape. The idea is to go for something that's easy-care, with season-long interest, so you never have to worry about what's outside your door.
We all lead such busy lives. You don't want an outdoor living space where you're looking at more chores or another to-do list.

Hat's Off to Cecil!
It is wonderful when we get notes in appreciation of our staff, services and products. This is the case, with a note we recently received about our Farmers' Market Booth Clerk and Grill Master Cecil Blankenship. Here is the note we received:
Dear Sir:
The older gentleman that you have working in the Farmer's Market and cooking is a great "ambassador" for your company. He is usually outside. He is a fantastic public relations person. He knows the majority of the people in Washington. Also, he encourages people to go to Hillermann's for the bedding plants, shrubs, and trees. In other words, he "talks up" Hillermann's throughout the community.
I love his hotdogs and conversation about the community and knowledge of plants. He has the rare knack of making strangers to the community feel right at home. I understand that he gave a lecture on container gardening at a local church. The report from a friend was -- "it was a great evening."
Respectfully, Travis
Thank you Travis for the wonderful note with the appreciation of a member of our team at Hillermann Nursery & Florist. A huge "Thank You" to Cecil for all he does for us here at Hillermann's and for the community! Keep up the good work and your friendly personality.
