Monarch Butterflies Could Use Your Help

Caterpillar on Butterfly weed plant By Tim Smith, Missouri Department of Conservation

The sight of a beautiful orange and black monarch butterfly in Missouri is likely to be less common this year, but you may be able to help the ones that do arrive here. A January 2014 report from their overwintering forest areas in Mexico indicated that only 1.65 acres were occupied by monarchs this winter. That makes this the third straight year of steep declines. The overwintering areas have been monitored since 1993 and the largest occupied area was 45 acres in 1996.

A number of factors have contributed to the decline of the monarch population in recent years. Unusually hot weather in the spring of 2012, unusually cold weather last spring, and the loss of habitat throughout the Great Plains have combined to create hardships for the insects. Higher grain prices in recent years have resulted in more land being cultivated for crops and more weed-free farming techniques have reduced the number of milkweed plants in most agricultural fields. Several milkweed species are still common in Missouri,

Items ready for planting a container garden at Hillermann Nursery
Create a Container Masterpiece at
Hillermann's
Potting Station

Hillermann's Potting Station is OPEN in our greenhouse. We are well stocked with containers of all styles and colors. Our custom blend potting soil is ready to scoop, and everything you need is within reach. Our helpful designers will be on hand to lend one if you need it. Bring your containers, choose one of ours, or try a new container garden to go - planted by our staff. Be our guest; the mess is ours to clean.

Planting Tips: Select your container. Gather plants you love for their color, scent and exposure (sun or shade). Use plants with similar light and water requirements. Fill your container with good quality potting mix. Decide your viewing angle to determine whether your container will be up against a wall or be seen from all sides. Experiment with your plants using the Thriller, Spiller, Filler guide (ask us for details). Remove plants from pots by gently cradling plant, tipping the container and kneading the plastic container as you go. Gently rough up the roots to give them air. Plant the crown (where the stem meets the roots) slightly above the soil level for better plant health, which means more blooms! Add decorative moss and/or mulch as a finishing touch and to seal in moisture. Let us know when you're done. We can help carry your masterpiece to the checkout and to your car.
