It is such a delight to see you again as you stop by to enjoy the warmth and color inside our greenhouses and our nursery lot. Thank you for coming in and helping us celebrate our 63rd anniversary.

We will be fully stocked by this weekend!! This is such an exciting time of year. The color on a dreary day is breathtaking. We had an extremely busy weekend last week, here are a few photos of our fun and frolic..........

Hope to see you soon,

FORGET SOIL, USE STRAW!

SPIN GARDEN GOLD WITH BALES OF STRAW                     By Sandi McDonald

Picture of Straw Bale Gardens by Joel Karsten - book cover       The book I am about to tell you about is entitled "STRAW BALE GARDENS", BY Joel Karsten. I have heard about this a few years ago and ordered my book from Amazon.com. It is a very intriguing garden method for those with small lots and maybe having a hard time bending over. We will have a sample of this gardening type in our retail lot at the store for you to see. Please come check it out.

In Karsten's method, the bale is used as both a container and a growing medium. The straw decomposes over the growing season, producing compost that feeds the plants. The twine around the bale holds the straw together and contains what is essentially a small compost pile.

Cooking With Herbs

Herbs can make a familiar dish new or lift an ordinary entre to gourmet status. Their subtle magic transforms soups, stews, salads, breads and even desserts. With a bouquet of herbs or a scattering of herb flowers as a garnish, your food will look as wonderful as it tastes.

       1. Basil - It's warm, heady flavor lends itself to Italian or Mediterranean cooking, especially tomato dishes or with eggs, cheese or salads. Special tips: Pesto Sauce: blend 2 c. of fresh basil, c. of parmesan, c. of olive oil, 3 tbs. of pine nuts or walnuts and 3 cloves of garlic minced. Use on pasta and vegetables.

       2. Chives - The subtle onion flavor of chives is perfect in omelets, salads, soups, or on potatoes and other vegetables. Special tips: Get rid of onion like odor by chewing on a fresh parsley sprig.
