Rarely Talked about Common Problem
An estimated 12 million Americans have it, Incontinence. An increasing number of television advertisements and product solicitations are hitting the airways, but it is still a topic people are embarrassed to admit to and talk about. Neurotechnology developments to address this problem emerging as well.

News of Interest
- Turning thought into motion, took a step forward. In a recent article in the journal Nature, scientists reveal new data for using brain computer interface by a consumer. The article titled, 'Reach and grasp by people with tetraplegia using a neurally controlled robotic arm' can be found by clicking here.
- Robust improvements where observed following eight-weeks of robotic gait training with sub-acute stroke patients. In this 103 participant study, significant gains were observed in functional walking and balance. To read more about this article in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, click here.
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS is a technology used for the treatment of depression. Recent a Deep TMS device offered by Brainways received a European CE Mark for the treatment of Chronic Neuropathic pain. Read more here.
- Epileptic treatment of vagus nerve stimulation is a technology with a long history of clinical studies. A new generation of implantable stimulation devices can detect and possibly halt seizures. This technology was featured in Scientific American, click here.
- Speech and language disorders caused by neurological conditions such as stroke or Parkinson's Disease may have a new potential treatment option. In a research study release from the University of Queensland in Australia, transcranial magnetic stimulation treatments resulted in positive outcomes from participants. Learn more by clicking here.
- Mobile Music Touch (MMT) is a new musical glove being tested by a research team from Georgia Tech and Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Preliminary tests show improved sensation and hand function by participants with tetraplegia due to spinal cord injury. Read more here.
- Codman & Shurtleff, Inc. (Codman) has received the U.S. FDA approval for its Medstream Programmable Infusion System, an implantable infusion pump and catheter system that delivers the anti-spasm drug Baclofen directly to the spinal canal. The device is used in the treatment of spasticity, a movement disorder often caused by stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury. - A new TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator) device, SENSUS, was approved by the FDA for use in the United States. The device is offered by NeuroMetrix and is used for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. Read more by clicking here.
- A research team at Rice University is developing a non-invasive brain-machine interface to a robotic orthotic device that is targeted for upper-limb rehabilitation for stroke survivors. The new technology will interpret brain waves that let a stroke patient willingly operate an exoskeleton that wraps around the arm from the fingertips to the elbow. Read more here.
- New research was released for a device to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea and published in the European Respiratory Journal. The device, offered by ImThera Medical, Inc. is a hypoglossal neurostimulation (THN) implanted system. Read more here.

- External Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (eTNS™) system, called the Monarch™ received CE Certification for use in Europe. The device, offered by NeuroSigma, Inc., is used for the adjunctive treatment of epilepsy and major depressive disorder. The patches are typically worn while the user is asleep.
