Kidspree is almost here!
Kidspree is right around the corner but we are still in need of volunteers! We need assistants to help local children in need shop for the clothes they need to start the new school year prepared and confident. One morning of your time can make a huge difference in a kids life. Volunteers and famillies are also served breakfast. Both our Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo events at Kohl's need helpers. The event is August 2, but all volunteers must be fingerprinted by July 17. Thanks to the SLO YMCA and Paso Robles Police Department for providing the LiveScan free of charge. We also want to thank all of the donors and local businesses who have sponsored children, including Zurn, Sesloc, Kiwanis Club of SLO, Rotary Club of SLO Daybreak, Union Bank, Altrusa International Foundation and Specialty Construction. And a big thank you to Bay-Osos Kiwanis Club and Paso Robles Optimist Club for providing breakfast to the participants, their families and all of the volunteers. And thank you to Super Cuts who donated haircuts for some of the children! If you want to volunteer or sponsor a child visit our website.

It's Almost Time to Stuff the Bus!
|
There is only one more month until Stuff the Bus! But it's not too late to start a donation site at your business or office. This is a great opportunity for workplaces to come together as a team and help out local children in need. All you have to do is pick a visible location to set up your donation site. Next, encourage your employees, clients and customers to bring in school supplies. Then between August 17-21, bring your donations to one of our drop-off locations located through out the county. This year we are also doing a creative collection site contest. To enter post a photo of your collection box to facebook.com/unitedwayslo tweet to @uwsloc or email to rcementina@unitedwayslo.org by 3 p.m. Monday, August 17. Prizes will be awarded to the workplaces with the most creative donation drop-off sites. We are also in need of volunteers to help out at the drop-off locations. This could be a great team building opportunity for your business as well! Use the email above if you are interested or need more information. Volunteers are needed all week long at various locations throughout the county. To see times and places available, or to sign up to volunteer visit our website.

New Financial Stability Report Available
United Way's of California have released Struggling to Get By: The Real Cost Measure in California. This new financial stability report measures the real cost of living in California's communities. The report seeks to answer questions about the real rate of poverty in California, what poverty looks like across different races and genders, and more. It also introduces "Real Cost Measure", a new tool that provides a more realistic picture of poverty than the Federal Poverty Line. This useful tool also creates "basic needs" budgets for households, using actual costs for food, housing, transportation, healthcare, childcare and taxes throughout California. The report also has an interactive county and neighborhood maps, where users can see the level of poverty in their area. To read the full report, see its key findings, or to use one of the interactive tools, visit our website.
