Youth Essay Contest Deadline Aproaching
Best-selling author, Max Brooks, will be speaking at the Spanos Theatre on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. about his latest book, The Harlem Hellfighters. The graphic novel tells the riveting story of the highly decorated, barrier-breaking, historic black regiment-the Harlem Hellfighters. In anticipation of this event, SLO County Junior High and High School students are invited to enter a Youth Essay Contest. Six award winners will get the chance to meet Max Brooks at a VIP party, and will also take home a MacSuperstore Gift Card!

There is just one Saturday left for VITA assistance! Individuals and families with income under $53,000 may also schedule in person appointments for preparation assistance with volunteers from VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). These certified IRS volunteers will provide free basic income tax preparation with electronic filing. Call (805) 922-0329 to schedule an appointment at our Grover Beach site.

The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) was created to supplement and expand the work of local social service agencies in an effort to help people with economic emergencies. Funds are not intended to make up for budget shortfalls or to be considered just a line item in an annual budget. Eligible uses for funds include programs such as served meals, groceries, shelter, and rental and utility assistance. Deadline: 4:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2015.
Nonprofit organizations with a focus on improving SLO County through their work in Education, Income, or Health are encouraged to apply for the Community Impact Fund. (Please review the guidelines for specific eligibility requirements.) United Way of San Luis Obispo County continues to strategically focus on creating lasting change in SLO County, emphasizing root cause and prevention strategies in the selection process. Paso Robles Fire Department and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grants workshop in Paso Robles, May 4-5, 2015. This training is applicable to grant seekers across all disciplines. Attend this class and you'll learn how to find grants and write winning grant proposals.
United Way partners are offered a special tuition rate of $425 which includes class workbook and accompanying resource CD that's packed full of tools and more than 200 sample grant proposals.
Beginning and experienced grant writers are encouraged to attend. Seating is limited, online reservations are necessary. Please use code "CANPO" to receive this $30 discount off full price at registration. Tuition payment is not required at the time of enrollment.

Directed Giving Campaign Meters Win Award

The SLO Downtown Association recently awarded honors to two dozen businesses at its 26th Annual Beautification Awards Breakfast. The awards are given to those businesses that made physical or aesthetic improvements toward keeping Downtown SLO beautiful in the 2014 calendar year.
Beautification Award Committee members Michele Gordon, Jackie Crane, Karen Kile, Bruce Fraser, Dominic Tartaglia, and Brent Vanderhoof assisted chair Marshall Ochylski in jurying the candidates and categorizing the awards. The Directed Giving Campaign repurposed parking meters were selected for the Executive Director's Award.
UWSLOC is the fiscal agent for these meters and donations are distributed to local services providers helping those in need.
