Special Feature: Youth Board Grants

Youth Board Grants
Now in it's 5th year, 89 high school students have been members of the United Way Youth Board. Since it's inception in 2008, the Youth Board has been awarding three $1,000 grants to youth driven projects each year. Board members carefully deliberate the applications, and select the projects which are most meaningful. Over the years, a wide variety of projects have been funded, including books written by cancer survivors, world champion robotics teams, and juvenile hall tutoring programs:

2008-2009: SLO High Peer Mediators and Atascadero Octagon Club
2009-2010: Flamson Middle School AVID Class, SLO County YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters School Nipomo School Based Program
2010-2011: Atascadero Greyhounds Robotics Team, Melinda Marchiano, Chalk Mountain Garden Group
2011-2012: Big Brothers Big Sisters Sinsheimer School Based Program, Estero Bay Youth Club, Restorative Partners Juvenile Hall Project

The Youth Board is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 grant awards. Projects must be youth driven, with the aid of an adult mentor and a sponsor organization to act as fiscal agent. Applications are due by 4:00 PM on December 14th. For more information about the United Way Youth Board or to download a 2012-2013 grant application, visit www.unitedwayslo.org.

Remnants of the Past

Remnants of the Past Trevor and Alyssa Thank you volunteers and supporters! We made over $4,000 for our Imagination Library at Remnants of the Past last month. We're especially thankful for California Conservation Corps, Grizzly Youth Academy, and our other 75 volunteers who joined us at the four day event. Volunteers, like Trevor and Alyssa, pictured at right, got in to the spirit, helping to sell Remnants of the Past jute tote bags and offering porter services to guests and vendors. Save the date for June 1-2, 2013 when we'll be back partnering with the vintage show again!  Email volunteer@unitedwayslo.org if you would like more information or to be added to our volunteer list.

Coats for Christmas

Coats for Christmas For the past 15 years, the San Luis Obispo community has generously provided our County's homeless with a wonderful home-cooked Christmas Day dinner, live entertainment and much needed care packages containing brand new sleeping bags, hooded sweatshirts, rain gear and toiletries. The Jewish Community initiated this event in order to serve those with the greatest need on Christmas Day and their goal again this year is to be able to help those without shelter to stay warm and protected from the elements during the upcoming winter months. Donations of money to help provide warm coats are now being accepted. Contributions can be made via the United Way of San Luis Obispo County website, by calling United Way with a credit card number at (805) 541-1234 or checks may be sent to PO Box 14309, San Luis Obispo, CA 93406 and earmarked, "Coats". The coats cost $20 each for small through large sizes and $25 for XL through 4XL sizes. This year's goal is to raise enough funds to provide 350 coats to the local homeless population. For more information about this event, please contact Sheri Eibschutz at (805) 594-1999.
