Special Feature: Money Talks for Teens

Money Talks for Teens

Money Talks for Teens is a money management curriculum aimed at 16-18 year olds, and taught by local finance professionals who volunteer their time at high schools. In its third year, this program provides students with accurate, non-biased information and hands-on activities in financial literacy. Pictured above is volunteer Ryan Caldwell from R.E. Wacker Associates teaching students at San Luis Obispo High School. To learn more, contact Dominique Simonian at (805) 541-1234 or dsimonian@unitedwayslo.org

Volunteer and Get a Free Pass!

We're excited for the upcoming Remnants of the Past antique and vintage show that brings the best treasures in the nation to the Central Coast. United Way of San Luis Obispo County has been selected as the charity partner for the weekend long event this October 19-21, 2012 at the Alex Madonna Expo Center. Proceeds will benefit our Imagination Library program. We still have a few volunteer shifts available! Volunteers will receive free entrance to all three days of the show if they volunteer for 4 or more hours. Volunteers will be porters for vendors and customers, sell special jute tote bags, and work at the valet station. Email volunteer@unitedwayslo.org to sign up!

Dining Out for a Good Cause

During the month of October, dine at Et Voilą Restaurant and 5% of  the net proceeds will be donated to United Way. Et Voilą's offerings change according to the season, the market, and Chef Jose' Dahan's inspiration, including specialties from traditional French and international dishes to more contemporary cuisine.

The restaurant is located at 12304 Los Osos Valley Road, and open for lunch Tuesday-Friday and for dinner Thursday-Saturday. Click here to see the menu, and visit www.etvoilarestaurant.com for hours.

Make a Difference Day

Volunteer for the 15th Annual Make A Difference Day! Join hundreds of community members and college students who will volunteer their time at sites across the county. Organized by Cal Poly's Center for Community Engagement and United Way, the day begins with a kickoff breakfast at 9:00 AM at Chumash Auditorium, and community service takes place from 10:00-2:00 PM. Sign up as an individual online at www.VolunteerSLO.org, or organize a group from your club or workplace by emailing hmorana@unitedwayslo.org.

A Special Evening

Join us on Wednesday, November 14 for a special screening of "A Matter of Trust: Billy Joel in the USSR", a musical documentary following Billy Joel's 1987 tour to the Soviet Union. Enjoy a reception at King David's Masonic Center at 5:30 PM featuring entertainment by Mark Burnes, followed by the movie at Downtown Centre Cinema at 7:00 PM. 25 years ago United Way CEO, Rick London, had already been a key member of Billy Joel's management team for a decade, when the decision was made to tour the USSR. London was the one responsible for making the tour and documentary film a reality, which ended up being one of the most difficult -and incredible- experiences of his life. Come hear his story. The 75-minute documentary is for rock 'n' roll fans and history buffs alike and contains clips of Joel's performances, as well as his time touring with his family and interactions with fans. Movie tickets include the reception, film screening and entry into a drawing for prizes and autographed memorabilia. They are available online at www.unitedwayslo.org.
