Summertime means vacation for some, but not for ADAO!
Thanks to Jordan Zevon, we started off July with a bang with a wildly successful Warren Zevon tribute event that boosted asbestos awareness and raised funds for ADAO. A packed house turned out, demonstrating how blending advocacy with art can take our educational messages to new audiences.
Our legislative advocacy has been kicked into high gear since TSCA passed in June. We participated in two stakeholder calls with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in July, served as a resource for the media, and produced our ban asbestos video featuring President Obama, Senator Boxer, and others.
Thanks to our supporters, we're planning our 10th Congressional Staff briefing in September with a panel of five speakers to discuss asbestos and its impact on public health, consumer safety, our environment, and implementing TSCA reform to confirm the EPA will name asbestos in the first ten chemicals for testing and action. Our ADAO community is tops at calling U.S. Members of Congress to urge them to send staffers to our educational briefing. It's a snap and you will find details and instructions in our blog.
Despite such progress, July was an undeniably painful month as we lost three of our beloved Mesothelioma Warriors. David Dioguardi, David Fry and Fred Riebel are gone from us too soon and will be dearly missed by their family, friends, and the entire ADAO community.
In times of loss, I'm especially thankful to you all for your constant support of ADAO's mission to end asbestos exposure. From our tireless volunteers to our generous sponsors--YOU make progress possible.
August 1 is World Lung Cancer Day, and I'm reminded that lung cancer--a major risk of asbestos exposure--is the #1 killer of both men and women in the U.S. This serves as a sobering reminder of why we do what we do. Together, we're making the world a safer place for everybody.
