 2013 Year in Review

President's Message

Linda 2012

Happy New Year!  In this January newsletter, we are proud to share our 2013 Year In Review in pictures.  We look back at an exciting year that included testimony before Congress, international awards, a statement from the U.S. Surgeon General and much more.  ADAO has grown exponentially in 2013.  Special thanks to the many ADAO volunteers, interns, sponsors, and the brave mesothelioma patients and families for their continued support. Because of YOU, we had the best year ever for education, advocacy, and community.

ADAO is ready for 2014!  With more than 25,000 people in the ADAO network, we took our voices to the front lines to influence global policy, advocate for an asbestos ban, and promote research.  It is through our solidarity and collaboration that our voices and actions bring us closer to ending asbestos-caused diseases.

Our 10th Annual ADAO International Asbestos Awareness Conference: Where Knowledge and Action Unite!, April 4-6, 2014, is shaping up to be one of our most exciting and powerful events.   Reserve your Marriott rooms now to lock in the low ADAO discounted rate. Spaces are limited! Would you like to honor loved ones who have lost their lives or are currently battling asbestos diseases? Consider publishing a Family Tribute page in the 2014 conference program.

Thank you to our ADAO family!  As we begin celebrating our 10th anniversary, it is because of you, your efforts, and your continued support that ADAO has grown to be much more than an organization focused solely on banning asbestos.

Together, change is possible. ~  Linda

2014: Asbestos. One Word. One World. One Week.
GAAW
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is pleased to announce the 10th annual Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW) from April 1 - 7, 2014 which gives countries seven days of global advocacy, education and community building. During GAAW, ADAO will feature guest blogs, patients' stories, and conclude with an asbestos victims' candlelight vigil as we raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos, prevention, and treatment.

GAAW is truly a collaborative effort involving asbestos victims' organizations and leading experts all working together to end the deadly legacy of asbestos through education and awareness to prevent exposure, policy to ban asbestos, and a cure for asbestos-related diseases. We sincerely hope that you will join us in collaboration and action during Global Asbestos Awareness Week.

OSHA Listens and Takes Action: New Asbestos Fact Sheet

This past July, as the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) was in Washington, D.C. for our Senate staff briefing, I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. David Michaels, Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to discuss asbestos hazards and workers safety, and the need for additional resources to educate and to protect the public from asbestos-related diseases.

ADAO encouraged OSHA to produce a Fact Sheet for asbestos hazards - and it's here!  The newly updated and extremely informative resource can be found on OSHA's publications page here! Read More...
Powerful Hazards Report: "Lab Rats: The Anatomy of Deadly Product Defense Campaigns" by Rory O'Neill

There is no such thing as safe exposure to asbestos. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the EPA, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have all declared asbestos a known human carcinogen. So where does the science come from that allows the asbestos industry to continue?

In a Hazards magazine special online report, editor Rory O'Neill investigates the asbestos industry's go-to scientists and breaks down the industry's four-step strategy to give its deadly product a clean bill of health: 1. Buy some evidence, 2. Have a promotional tour, 3. Get your man on the inside, 4. Take the money and run. Read More...

"Occupational Lung Cancer Symposium: Causes and Screening" by Desre Kramer and Priyanka Raj

The Occupational Cancer Research Centre is hosting a symposium on occupational lung cancer on February 24, 2014, in Toronto. The symposium will focus on recent research on the burden and prevalence of major exposures linked to occupational lung cancer, such as asbestos and diesel engine exhaust.  Linda Reinstein will be the keynote speaker. We will explore emerging advances in lung cancer screening.  Earlier this year, numerous healthcare organizations in the United States commended the use of helical computerized tomography scanning (HCT) for the screening of lung cancer in eligible individuals at particular risk due to their age and smoking status.  We will consider the use of this screening in an occupational context, and examine logistical and ethical issues of targeting screening to exposed workers.  This symposium is open to policy-makers, researchers, and medical professionals.  For more information about the symposium and the Occupational Cancer Research Centre, visit us at OccupationalCancer.ca.  AGENDA

Honor Those You Love: 2014 Conference Program Family Tributes

This year, consider publishing a Family Tribute page in the 2014 10th Annual Asbestos Awareness Conference program in honor of loved ones who have lost their lives or are currently battling asbestos disease. Your family's tribute page will not only serve to honor your loved ones but all donations will go to support ADAO's continued efforts to eliminate asbestos-caused disease. There are 5 tribute donation levels allowing your loved one to be featured in a beautiful full-page, 1/2 page, or 1/4 page tribute in the 2014 conference program. To view samples or for inspiration in designing your own Family Tribute Program page reference our 2013 Conference Program (starting on page 47 with Steve McQueen) by clicking here.

COMMUNITY

Our sincere thanks to all who submitted names to the  2013 Mesothelioma Warrior Candle Lighting List.  On December 28, 2013, we lit candles in loving memory of Warriors we have lost and on January 4, 2014, we lit candles in honor and support of Warriors who continue to fight bravely.

We had over two hundred new names submitted, reaching a total of nearly eight hundred Mesothelioma Warriors to honor both in life and death. Many of these honored Warriors also participated in the "Share Your Story" collection on ADAO's website. It is these stories that inspire ADAO and the mesothelioma community to continue to work towards a global asbestos ban. Their inspirational stories can be read by clicking the hyperlink on their name.

A special thank you to ACOR, Jill Vaughn, whose original candle lighting tradition still brings us hope and light year after year, and to Julie Burns, who graciously compiled the list of this year's warriors. Read More...

Heather's 8th Annual Lungleavin Day Celebration!

Mesothelioma Warrior and longtime ADAO community member Heather Von St. James is turning tragedy into triumph with her Annual Lungleavin Day Celebration on February 1, 2014.

Eight years ago, when her daughter was only a few months old, Heather had a lung removed due to mesothelioma. Her fears were overwhelming. Would she live to see her child grow up? On the first anniversary of her surgery, she and her husband, Cameron, started Lungleavin Day, a day to let go of our fears and resolve to live life to the fullest. Read More...

"Handed a Death Sentence" - Randy's Story

We have all been touched by asbestos in individual ways, yet we are joined together by a firm community bond. As a testament to the strength of our global family, ADAO is highlighting the courageous stories of our members with the "Share Your Story" feature on our website.

This week, we would like to honor the story of Randy, as shared by his widow, Wendy, a beloved member of our ADAO family. Read More...

World Cancer Day: "Stand Up To Cancer!"

World Cancer Day takes place every year on February 4 and represents an initiative under which the entire world can unite in the fight against the global cancer epidemic.  The day, which is coordinated by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to help save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease. As a melanoma survivor and mesothelioma widow, join me as I "Stand Up to Cancer."
