President's Message

The holidays are always a busy time for everyone, and here at ADAO it's no different! We are excited to introduce "ADAO Asbestos Information," our new free ADAO mobile app from Apple! Access to the latest asbestos information and resources for patients, families, workers, and homeowners, is now easier and faster than ever before.
Register today! ADAO has officially launched our 10th Annual ADAO International Asbestos Awareness Conference, "Where Knowledge and Action Unite." The event will be held on April 4 - 6, 2013 in Washington D.C. Over 30 renowned experts and asbestos victims will present on the latest advancements in disease prevention, global advocacy, and treatment for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
In November, ADAO continued our legislative efforts in Washington by representing the voice of the victims at the U.S. House staff briefing in opposition to "The Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act - H.R. 982." We are the only organization going to Washington to represent asbestos victims' rights and we won't stop until these victims are represented as they deserve.
As we come to the end of the year, I want to give special thanks to the many ADAO volunteers, interns, brave mesothelioma patients and families for their continued support. To those who have shared their stories, served as conference presenters, 2013 Conference Sponsors, and members of the ADAO Leadership and Science Advisory Board we are eternally grateful. These are the individuals who fuel our work with contributions in dollars, hours, thought, and action. Sincerely, I hope that this holiday season is joyful and restful for you and your loved ones!
In unity,

How To Find a Doctor or Treatment Facility Specializing in Mesothelioma and Asbestos-Related Diseases
"Mesothelioma - can't pronounce it, can't cure it," was ADAO President Linda Reinstein's devastated, personal reaction when she learned of her husband's asbestos-caused disease. "It took me many weeks to even begin to understand the diagnosis my husband had received and find the very limited treatment options available to him," she adds.
Navigating the complex health care system can sometimes feel like an impossible maze of information- but it doesn't have to be this way. Over the years, Linda has compiled a comprehensive list of treatment centers specializing in mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases. Click here for access to ADAO's complete blog that features her helpful treatment directory. The National Cancer Institute also features an excellent page to answer your questions on How To Find a Doctor or Treatment Facility If You Have Cancer and MARF has information about treatment and support (available in both English and Spanish). We want everyone to have easy access to this crucial information and have included it in our new mobile app. Just seconds after ADAO posted our new Medical Resource, Lisa commented on Facebook: "This will be such a help to those who don't know what to do or where to go after receiving the crippling diagnosis of meso. I think most of us had never even heard the word mesothelioma prior to a loved one's diagnosis. This resource is a lifeline for both patients and their families. Well done, ADAO!"

New ADAO App: "ADAO Asbestos Information"
The new ADAO app connects users to the latest news regarding treatments for mesothelioma, a cancer caused only by asbestos, and ways to prevent asbestos exposure. The free app is easily available to all on iTunes under "ADAO Asbestos Information." Touch the icons to learn about ADAO's three initiatives - Education, Advocacy and Community - and "Connect With Us" to access social networks.
"Many of us can think back to the heartbreaking time when we first heard the news that a loved one had an asbestos-caused disease," expressed ADAO President and Co-Founder Linda Reinstein. "ADAO is committed to replacing that fear, loneliness and confusion with the knowledge that there are others who want to support you by connecting and sharing via the new mobile app."
An exclusive feature from the mobile app includes a direct dial to three government agencies: the Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These direct dials give people easy access to report an asbestos-related problem or request information. READ MORE:

Make a Year-End Donation to Help ADAO Continue Educating and Advocating to Prevent Asbestos Exposure

As this year comes to an end, we look back at ADAO's 2013 accomplishments with pride but also with tremendous gratitude towards our supporters who made year-end contributions that helped us exceed our goals. When we needed to testify in Washington, you made that possible. When 125 asbestos experts from around the world gathered for our conference, you made that possible too. Some of you gave in memory of a beloved Mesothelioma Warrior. Some made donations to ADAO as holiday gifts to honor friends and family. Read More...

Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Mesothelioma Warrior Memorial Photo Collection (Graphics)
Every day, more than 300 people around the world die from preventable asbestos-related diseases. Don't be fooled - asbestos mining, manufacturing, processing, and distribution still continues despite the many lives it has destroyed. In 2012, the USA imported more than 1,000 metric tons of asbestos and an estimated 2 million metric tons were consumed around the world. Read More...

STORIFY: Asbestos Victims Outraged with the Passage of the So-Called FACT Act (HR 982)
What happened on November 13, 2013? U.S. Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) said it quite eloquently: The FACT Act allows "asbestos victims to be revictimized." Yet, those victims did not sit silently -- their voices were heard.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 221 to 199 to pass the FACT Act (H.R. 982). The FACT Act is a special interest bill that jeopardizes the ability of those harmed by asbestos poisoning to hold corporations accountable for exposing them to a known carcinogen. Read More...

ADAO Brings the "Voice of the Victims" to the House Staff Briefing in Opposition of the FACT Act
Sometime I feel like a broken record when I remind Congressional Members that "Asbestos Victims Oppose H.R. 982. The FACT Act was written for the asbestos industry - NOT US!" Ellen Patton, mesothelioma patient, and I joined Michelle Schwartz from Alliance for Justice, Julia Duncan of American Association for Justice, and Judy Van Ness, a mesothelioma widow for the Asbestos Cancer Victims' Rights Campaign, at the briefing.
