2012 Year in Review

President's Message

This September, we look back and we look forward. On Labor Day, we look back and remember those we have lost to work-related diseases. When we look back on 9/11, our hearts go out to the families still suffering with diseases caused by inhaling the deadly dust at Ground Zero.

Our 10th Annual Asbestos Awareness Conference will also be about looking back and looking forward. Please mark you calendars to be with us on April 4-6, 2014 in Washington, DC. With the theme "Where Knowledge and Action Unite," we celebrate our accomplishments in 10 years and look forward to what the next 10 years will hold. We acknowledge everyone who contributed to the change we have seen.

We mourn the loss of Ron Motley of South Carolina, a tireless legal advocate for asbestos victims. We congratulate Fernanda Giannasi of Brazil on her retirement as Labor Inspector after her career of unrelenting pressures, lawsuits, propaganda, and slander from the asbestos industry. Above all, we remember that, together, change is possible!  We look forward to a future free from asbestos.

In Unity,

Linda

On behalf of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), we congratulate Fernanda Giannasi who retired this month as Labor Inspector for the Ministry of Labor in São Paulo, Brazil. For three decades, Fernanda has defended workers' health and safety in Brazil and was a founding member of Associação Brasileira dos Expostos ao Amianto (ABREA).

Recently called Brazil's Brocovich, Fernanda has been a passionate and tireless leading voice in the global ban asbestos. Read More...

"Outliving the Unlivable" - Rachel's Story

We have been touched by asbestos in individual ways, yet we are joined together by a bond of community. This month, we would like to honor the story of Rachel. Read Rachel's Story...

As a testament to the strength of our global family, ADAO highlights the courageous stories of asbestos victims around the world through our website's "Share Your Story" feature. We encourage you to submit your personal story. Sharing is powerful, allowing us to heal and raise awareness.

"Daughters of the Dust: The Changing Face of Mesothelioma"

Heather Von St James, Lou Williams, Janelle Bedel, Debbie Brewer, Linda Reinstein, and Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) are all featured in a recently written article by Gary Cohn that documents the changing face of mesothelioma.

Cohn goes on to say that, "It is not only up to resilient women like Von St. James, Reinstein, and Williams to speak out about this spreading illness. It is up to all of us to stand up against the misuse of this deadly carcinogen and become a part of the ever-growing, interconnected mesothelioma community, because only then will we have the chance to rewrite this needless fate."

Reinstein comments in it by explaining how our voices are being heard and shared more than ever by saying that "The power of social media proves there are no boundaries. We can connect and share with people in a millisecond." Read More...

EDUCATION
Don't be Fooled, the FACT Act Wasn't Written for Asbestos Victims

The FACT Act (Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency) Wasn't Written for Asbestos Victims
The FACT Act  Wasn't Written for Asbestos Victims
ADAO has been an outspoken opponent of the FACT Act (Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency) since 2012. Why? Because the FACT Act is designed to make it even more difficult for asbestos victims, including our ADAO community, to receive our "day in court" and the compensation we deserve. Asbestos disease claims 30,000 American lives each year and imports continue. Read More...

Labor Day: Light a Candle to Honor Workers Exposed to Asbestos

Labor Day
"Labor Day ... is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."  ~ U.S. Department of Labor

On Monday, September 2, 2013, we will celebrate American workers, but we will also remember the workers we have lost to work-related diseases. We will honor the people who, in their efforts to support their families and put food on the table, lost their lives from on-the-job exposure to toxins such as asbestos. Read More...
