President's Message

July was a great month for education, advocacy, and community! Special thanks to all of our ADAO supporters for making calls to their U.S. Senators to encourage staffers to attend our briefing, "Asbestos: Impact on Public Health, the Environment, and the Economy." Many community members were able to share their personal stories directly with their Senators' office. I owe the interest in asbestos by our lawmakers to the hard work from all of you!
ADAO was pleased to serve as a Congressional witness for the third time at Chairman Barbara Boxer's Environment & Public Works Full Committee hearing on July 31, "Strengthening Public Health Protections by Addressing Toxic Chemicals." It was a powerful day, where 19 witnesses testified on the need for meaningful Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) reform. I urged the committee in my testimony, "Congress should draft and pass meaningful TSCA reform legislation that truly strengthens protections for our families and environment by preventing the further use of asbestos. One life lost to a preventable asbestos-caused disease is tragic; hundreds of thousands of lives lost in unconscionable."
It is difficult to watch Congress move glacially slow to draft and pass legislation, so ADAO remains active in Washington, DC on two other strategic prevent legislative efforts.
Thanks to each of you who donate, volunteer, and are actively engaged in on social networks - we are making progress to prevent exposure to eliminate asbestos-caused disease. The community action has never been stronger and we have seen how "Together, change is possible" work in real-time.
In Unity,
Linda
