An Article from JTA

A decade ago in Los Angeles, two organizations opened their doors with a call to prayer - or they would have if they had any doors to open. Ikar, led by Rabbi Sharon Brous, and Nashuva, led by Rabbi Naomi Levy, were conceived separately. But when they launched in 2004, both offered a novel, and in many ways similar, approach to Jewish spirituality and community - regularly scheduled, rabbi-led services that were not affiliated with any movement or institution, that met in rented space, and that were avowedly not synagogues.

Anti-Semites always are around to remind Jews to be scared.
A Jewish man found a swastika drawn on the gate to his home where he had put up decorations for Hanukkah. David Cohen, 72 and a resident of North Fort Myers, Fla., told police that he found the swastika drawn onto his gate on Monday afternoon.

Saperstein
An article from JTA

The U.S. Senate confirmed Rabbi David Saperstein, a Reform movement leader, for a State Department post. On Friday, Saperstein in a 61-35 vote won confirmation as ambassador at large for international religious freedom. He will be the fourth person and the first non-Christian to serve in the post. The ambassador travels the world making the case for minorities facing persecution or discrimination. In recent years, ambassadors have taken up the causes of Muslims in Burma and Christians in China and Sudan, among other cases.

For L.I. Synagogues A More Perfect Union?
An article from The Jewish Week

And the coffee and danish shall bind them.
Fueled by demographic changes on Long Island's South Shore and in a bid to stay afloat, members of a Reconstructionist congregation sold their building in Hewlett in 2012 and began renting space in a Reform synagogue in Rockville Centre. At first, it was every shul for itself: Congregation Beth Emeth, the Reconstructionist synagogue, and Central Synagogue, the Reform one, held separate Sabbath services, Hebrew school classes and other programs.

As Hanukkah nears, let the grousing begin.
Too much is made of a holiday that Judaism ranks as a minor festival - one whose rite takes no more than five minutes to complete each night - s ome American Jews will say. Some will complain about the season's excessive commercialism or materialism.

For now, vote on UN resolution calling for Israeli West Bank pullout appears to have been postponed. Israel is bracing for one of the most challenging days it has known on its diplomatic front, with four resolutions it regards as endangering its security coming up for a vote on Wednesday.

GasField
An article from The Jewish Week

A new natural gas field was discovered off Israel's Mediterranean coast-the third largest found in Israeli waters. The Royee field contains 3.2 trillion cubic feet of extractable natural gas, the Israeli business daily Globes reported, citing a report released Sunday by Ratio Oil and Israel Opportunity Energy Resources, which owns the field.

Alan Gross was imprisoned while trying to connect Cuba's isolated Jewish community to the wider world. The deal that got him released five years later may do just that and much more.
Gross' flight home to suburban Washington on Wednesday with his wife, Judy, was part of a historic deal that overturns over five decades of U.S. policy isolating the Communist island nation helmed by the Castro brothers.

 An article from JNS.org

The conflict in Syria has forced millions to leave their homes, among them many of the country's Armenian minority. Many have fled and returned to Armenia, a safe haven for ethnic Armenians-much as Israel is for Jews around the world. So it is ironic, given this shared need for a homeland free of religious intolerance, that Armenia's own Jewish community has been pressured and intimidated since the country attained independence.

An article from JTA

The European Parliament passed a resolution that supports in principle recognition of a Palestinian state as part of peace talks with Israel.
The resolution, which was drawn up by five political groups, passed Wednesday in a 498-88 vote in Strasbourg, the European Parliament's press service wrote in a statement. There were 111 abstentions.
The measure affirms the parliament's support for "in principle recognition of Palestinian statehood and the two-state solution," the statement said. The nonbinding resolution also states that the parliament believes "these should go hand in hand with the development of peace talks, which should be advanced."

RussianJews Russian Jews' Love of Reform Judaism
An Article from e Jewish Philanthropy

How does a religious movement that made its way to Israel via America end up appealing to immigrants with roots in the atheistic Soviet Union? When worshippers arrive for Friday-night services at Israel's newest Reform congregation, they don't greet one another in Hebrew. Not in English either, as they would in some of the more established Reform congregations founded by Anglophone immigrants around the country.

Highlighting Campus Sexual Assault, Jewish Groups Have Taken a Lead
An article from JTA

Jewish campus groups were ready for the painful national dialogue that took place in the wake of murky rape allegations at the University of Virginia.
That's because organizations like Hillel and historically Jewish Greek houses such as Alpha Epsilon Pi, Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Delta Tau had been having the conversations for months before the explosive Rolling Stone story made national headlines -

LandForDeathLand for Death
An article from Tablet

Israel may face a wrenching choice between its democracy and Jewishness. And that's normal. Maybe all of Europe will soon follow the Swedes in recognizing a Palestinian state. Last week the E.U.'s new foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini expressed Europe's general impatience and called for the prompt creation of a Palestinian state. The world, she said, "cannot afford" another war in Gaza. And to make good on her word, the E.U. is now threatening to sanction Israel if it continues to avoid taking the steps toward a two-state solution.

Insiders blame billionaire owner Chris Hughes, 31, for demise of The New Republic, a journalistic institution that punched above its weight
Walk into a coffee shop anywhere in downtown Washington, DC and shout, "Any former writers or editors of The New Republic here?" Chances are half the customers will raise their hands (and the other half will be lying)

SeafoodCan Seafood Be Kosher and Sustainable?
An article from The New York Times

A FEW months ago I was seated at a sustainable-seafood dinner in which neither the hip cooking school director to my left nor the locavore food activist on my right ate the meal. On the menu was Montauk-caught monkfish, a once overexploited creature whose stocks have been rebuilt as a result of markedly improved fisheries management. Still, my tablemates eschewed the monkfish and ate a vegetable plate instead.
Why? Both were observant Jews and monkfish, it turns out, is not kosher.

HarryPotterIs Harry Potter Anti-Semitic?
An article from The Jewish Week

Q. When I saw the latest Harry potter film I was appalled at the clear use of anti-Semitic stereotype in depictions of goblin bankers, miserly, hooked nose and all. And this is what we're showing our kids? Isn't a tacit acceptance of such damaging stereotypes if we ignore them? Shouldn't Jews be boycotting Harry Potter?
