In the past few years Rockhaven has seen steady growth in summer camp attendance, retreat and rental groups, the high ropes course programs and the zip line with Montana Whitewater.  Rockhaven is definitely the "little camp that could" and continues to be a source of inspiration for me as I know it is for many others who believe and support this outdoor ministry. 

  

Rockhaven is truly a special place and what makes it so special is you and the community that is built on its sacred ground.  Your continued support of this ministry and the summer program is important so that Rockhaven can continue to grow and broaden the transforming power of Jesus Christ for generations to come.

Today's children have been called "the digital generation", and it's become all too easy for children to be consumed by technology...  Hey, technology is great and provides a lot of opportunities for our children. However, there is still something to be said for quiet moments and the reconnection to God's creation and each other.  Camp allows us the ability to connect on a more personal level and to experience things and learn in ways that we often forget in our busy lives.  Summer camp is a special place that fosters social and spiritual growth and is one of the best places to "reconnect" us to the things in life that really matter.

Rockhaven Beginnings

 

On October 18, 1925, church members A.T. and Gelia Rutledge signed the deed that finalized the sale of 10 acres of land along the Gallatin River to First Presbyterian Church of Bozeman, MT, for the token sum of $1.  

 

The Rutledges had been using the land and the buildings as a summer home.  The had bought it from either the Shepards or the Benhams, related families who had run a lodge there for people traveling up and down the Gallatin Canyon by horse-drawn vehicles.  The families also herded cattle on the other side of the river, which was reached by a wooden bridge.  Ora Lemon a long time church member who passed away in 1999 remembered staying overnight at the Benham's with her older brother and sister after she had been home for Christmas.  Her family home was 20 miles farther up the canyon toward Big Sky. 

 

 

Rockhaven was used in 1926 Rockhaven by the church's Christian Endeavor Society for high school and college student meetings every Sunday evening. 

 

Early on it was decided that a chapel should be built at Rockhaven and in 1927, Eugene Crail, a local builder began construction.  The log chapel at Rockhaven was completed on July 28, 1928 and used by church members as a retreat and a place to worship in the outdoors.  The pastor at First Presbyterian Church at the time was the Rev. Herman Klemme who loved the camp and so under his leadership and vision Rockhaven began.
