Thanksgiving Dinner

Thomas Merton said, "The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another."

With compassion and interdependence in mind, I offer the following to you as you plan your Thanksgiving Meal this year.

3. Eat Less meat & Purchase Ethically & Humanely Raised Meat
4. Avoid pre-packaged foods and reduce packaging

Footprint
The ecological footprint score compares the amount of demand that human consumption places on nature to the supply of productive land available to meet this demand (biocapacity). The score is given in the number of planets it would take to support all of us if everyone lived the same way.

Take Action
Join Climate leaders by pledging to take action on these five initiatives:

1. Engage on the climate issue by speaking to other faith leaders about climate change to build awareness and support for climate solutions.
2. Energize by forming a creation care group in your faith community
3. Divest/Invest by shifting congregational and personal savings out from fossil fuels and into clean investments.
4. Vote to make climate one of their top three issues in every election and Contact your elected officials to let them know you care.
5. Educate by staying informed and continue to educate others through all available means.

Sharon Watkins on Climate

All of creation waits for us...to step up to preserve our God-given planetary home. How long must creation wait? - Rev Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

On September 23rd at the Washington National Cathedral, people of faith celebrated creation with song, prayer, and words of inspiration, amidst the sacred walls of American religious history and action. Religious leaders, including Sharon Watkins, spoke from their hearts, sharing stories about something or someone who inspired their climate work - families they know who have been impacted by climate change, a special place that is threatened, and above all, a love of God's earth which sustains everyone.

Clean Power Plan
Creation Justice Ministries welcomes and celebrates the release of the Clean Power Plan. As Christians, we are acutely aware of the threats posed by a changing climate. Already, we have seen rising floodwaters, severe droughts, disrupted access to food, harsh storms, higher rates of asthma, and increased vectorborne diseases.

Climate change is most harming the vulnerable among us: people living in poverty, older adults, and people living in countries least responsible for contributing to climate change. Our faith communities are on the front lines of providing relief and aid to those who are bearing the unequal burden of climate change.

Now, with the Clean Power Plan, we have a chance to prevent suffering by limiting a major contributor to climate change: carbon pollution. We urge every state to create a strong and effective state implementation plan that successfully meets carbon reduction targets --- without shifting costs to impoverished communities. In particular, we encourage renewable energy projects to meet state carbon reduction goals and to generate new jobs for working families. The Clean Power Plan allows each state to develop its own state implementation plan to meet a customized carbon reduction target. It elegantly recognizes the diversity of energy landscapes in the United States, giving each state an opportunity to account for the local economy as well as local eco-systems. God's creation is sacred, and we are called to responsibly steward the gifts of creation while protecting our vulnerable neighbors. Adopting the Clean Power Plan in every state will help us live out our faith commitments to stewardship and justice.

First Christian Church, Leavenworth, Kansas
FCC Leavenworth has been working hard to reduce their energy consumption, to reuse items and to recycle whatever they can.
A total of 16 windows were replaced this year with energy efficient windows.
They have reduced their trash by 30%.
They provide recycling all over the church, including the preschool. At this year's VBS, the kitchen staff was very careful to recycle all plastic containers, even going to the trouble to wash out the pudding cups and fruit cups so they could be recycled. Way to Go!

For Our Common Home: Process-Relational Responses to Laudato Si
Edited by John B. Cobb, Jr. and Ignacio Castuera
On June 18, 2015, Pope Francis addressed the world  about the fate of the planet, focusing especially on the threat of climate disaster. He called for a worldview that emphasizes interconnectedness of things and what he called an "integral ecology." In Claremont, CA, earlier the same month, a conference also focused attention on climate change and called for a new worldview that would reflect the interconnectedness of all things, or an "ecological civilization."
The task now for those who care about the fate of the world is to give whatever support they can to Pope Francis. As a first step, more than 60 persons involved in that conference answered the pope's call for dialogue and wrote responses to the pope's encyclical letter, Laudato si'. This book is a collection of those essays, written by people representing a diversity of faith traditions and cultures and many fields of activity and inquiry. They offer support, constructive criticism, and proposals for implementing the pope's ideas. FCC Madisonville
The FCC, Madisonville Community Garden has had a good  year supplying fresh vegetables to the Hopkins County Christian Food Bank. The fruits (and vegetables) come from the labors of volunteers from different churches, Master Gardeners, and retired volunteers. The Food Bank serves 50-60 recipients each day and fresh vegetables are supplied by the Community Garden 3 days a week. Over three thousand pounds of fresh vegetables have come out of the Community Garden in 2015 including: radishes, lettuce, onions, cabbage and sugar snap peas this spring; beans, peas, tomatoes, okra, bell, hot peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash, butter nut squash, acorn squash and zucchini this summer; and turnips, greens, kale, mustard, cabbage and sweet potatoes this fall.
We challenge and encourage individuals, clubs, churches and community groups to start a garden and help supply fresh vegetables to food banks in your community. We would be pleased to share what we have learned to any who are willing to plant a garden and feed hungry people.

Thought for the day
Stepping out of the busyness, stopping our endless pursuit of getting somewhere else, is perhaps the most beautiful offering we can make to our spirit.

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.
