From the President

At some point along the way I came to believe that what's good for the poet is also good for the preacher. Preachers are the poets of our pulpits. If they tend to their craft well, they take us to places we have never been before and show us a glimpse of the kingdom. They teach us "for God all things are possible," even for one such as I [Matthew 19:26].

The poet Emily Dickinson [1830-1886] knew this well when she wrote:

There is no Frigate like a Book

To take us Lands away,

Nor any Coursers like a Page

Of prancing Poetry -

This Traverse may the poorest take

Without oppress of Toll -

How frugal is the Chariot

That bears a Human soul.

I hope that you might take some time this summer to add some poetry to your theological diet. It will bode well for your sermons and give the folk to whom you minister something to reach for. It has always been lack of reach that has led to the paralysis of the soul.

Aristotle reminds us: "The poet should prefer probable impossibilities to improbable possibilities." Go for the probable and the impossible in your sermons and give life to those you serve.

Probably and impossibly yours,

Refugee & Immigration Ministries
Help Meet Refugee Emergency Needs - Now thru September!
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is requested to resettle 8% of ALL refugees who enter thru Church World Service offices, and RIM logo Disciples have assisted in resettling more than 40,000 refugees through Church World Service since the end of World War II. To do that, we partner with the 34 CWS refugee affiliate offices around the U.S. (See map online)

In recent months, our highest refugee arrival numbers have entered through our five CWS partner offices in Texas. Also, our North Carolina, Kentucky, California, Virginia, Indiana, New York, Ohio, Arizona, and Georgia offices have received significant numbers as well. Disciples have especially worked recently with refugees cultures from Iraq, Burma, Afghanistan, Somalia, Bhutan, Syria, and the Congo.

Just recently, Refugee & Immigration Ministries have been made aware that a large percentage of this Fiscal year's congressionally approved refugee arrivals will be entering during the months of August and September. To see how your church can help meet these emergency needs, visit Refugee & Immigration Ministries.
