From the President

Some people like to do it the easy way while some like to do it the right way. After a life of hard work some say, "I'll sit back for a change, put up my feet, and spend my kids inheritance." Those on the other end of the employment spectrum, the ones just starting off, might say, "Well, I do not have many responsibilities now, am making a good salary, and will just cruise along for a few years." I suppose both us old ones and us young ones are trying to find our groove.

Whether working at your craft a long time or a relatively short time, consider some folk who preceded you and found their groove: Ted Williams, at age 42, slammed a home run in his last official time at bat; Mickey Mantle, at age 20, hit 23 home runs his first full year in the major leagues; Golda Meir, at age 71, became Prime Minister of Israel; William Pitt II, at age 24, became Prime Minister of Great Britain; George Bernard Shaw, at age 94, saw one of his plays first produced; Mozart, at age 7, published his first composition; Benjamin Franklin, at age 16, was a newspaper columnist and helped frame the United States Constitution when he was 81; and, David Starr Jordan, at age 34, was the nation's youngest university president, serving at Indiana University then becoming the founding president of Stanford University.

Your life trajectory might just be in your dreams. You are never too old or too young to find the way, or as I like to say, for the way to find you. All I know, is that once you find your way there is no sitting back or cruising along, only engaging your vision and leaving the world a little better than you found it when you arrived.

Engagingly yours,

Mission Opportunities at General Assembly

What does "SOAR!" mean to you? For the members of the General Assembly Local Missions Committee, "SOAR!" is a call to Share Our Abundant Resources! Assembly participants are invited to give blood through the American Red Cross and knit or crochet scarves and other items for individuals living rough in Columbus - all without leaving the Convention Center. Or give a few hours of your time outside the Convention Center, by serving through the Mid-Ohio Habitat for Humanity Restore or pitching in to sort a semi-trailer full of produce which will be distributed to area food banks in partnership with the Society of St. Andrew. More information about these opportunities is available on Disciples Volunteering web site. Advanced registration is now available and strongly encouraged for the Food Drop and Habitat ReStore.

Youth Missions after GA

Youth groups are invited to make a week of the General Assembly.

The General Assembly Youth Planning Team has arranged for mission opportunities for youth groups who attend the General Assembly, to take place Thursday - Saturday following Assembly at three different Mission Destinations: Indianapolis, Lexington, or just outside Columbus. Food, housing, and work assignments are all being coordinated by your General Assembly Youth Planning Team. Cost for the weekend is $40/person. Participants must be entering sixth grade or above. Youth groups are responsible for their own transportation and must have one participating adult for every five youth. Learn more and register here.
