Happy EARTH Day
Earth

How Earth Day began -At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance. ---Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. They had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.

Earth Day is April 22nd and Earth Sunday can be celebrated April 19th or 26th.
The theme,

Sustainable Food in a Changing Climate , explores the relationship between climate change and the food that we eat using one of the lectionary texts for this Sunday.

Rev. Carol Devine (Green Chalice) and Rev. Rebecca Barnes (PC USA) worked together to write, compile and edit an expanded resource for 2015 that includes a children's sermon, children, youth and adult education materials, a prayer station and more.

Resources are available on the website.

WastED

The first sign that Scott Lynch's dinner at WastED was going to be an exceptional, truly entertaining experience came with the bread, when his waitress poured the hot "wax" from my candle into a little dish of rosemary and sea salt, and told him to use it as a dip. The candle was made from beef tallow, or rendered beef fat, which is normally discarded in restaurants (and homes) everywhere, but turns out to make a not-bad bread spread, in addition to providing a pretty and romantic addition to the table.

For three weeks, Blue Hill restaurant in Greenwich Village temporarily reinvented itself as wastED, a pop-up devoted to the theme of food waste and re-use. wastED collaborated with local farmers, fishermen, distributors, processors, plant breeders, producers, restaurants and retailers, reconceiving "waste" that occurs at every link in the food chain. They worked with more than twenty guest chefs to curate daily specials and help celebrate what chefs do every day on their menus (and peasant cooking has done for thousands of years): creating something delicious out of the ignored or un-coveted.

Plant Trees for
Earth Day 2015
The Canopy Project plants trees that help communities - especially the world's impoverished communities - sustain themselves and their local economies. Trees reverse the impacts of land degradation and provide food, energy and income, helping communities to achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Trees also filter the air and help stave off the effects of climate change. That's why, earlier this the year, Earth Day Network made a commitment with the Global Poverty Project to plant 10 million trees over the next five years in impoverished areas of the world. For every $1 you donate, we will plant trees where they are most needed - in areas such as Haiti, Uganda, Brazil, Mexico and urban areas in the U.S.

Inspire Others

Faith communities have the power to lead their members and our country toward climate solutions today. As leaders, it's up to us to inspire others to make an impact.
