From the President
I remember seeing a letter sent by a mother to her son. It reads in part:
"Just a few lines to let you know that I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know that you cannot read fast. You won't know the house when you come home ... we've moved. I won't be able to send you the address, as the last family that lived here took the numbers with them for their next house so they wouldn't have to change their address. About your father - he has a lovely new job where he has over 500 people under him; he is cutting grass at the cemetery. It only rained twice last week. First for three days, then for four days. Monday it was so windy that one of our chickens laid the same egg four times!"
I trust that you get the gist of this humor. I particularly like the postscript on the letter that reads:
"P.S. I was going to send you $10.00, but had already sealed the envelope." The letter is signed, "Your Loving Mother." Seems to me that there might be some estrangement between the mother and the son.
It also seems to me that we know in our hearts that we are estranged from our Divine parentage and might just receive a letter like the following:
"Dear Daughters and Sons,
Just a few thoughts to let you know that I'm still alive. I'm entering your thoughts because I know that you're slow to learn about me and lead such incredible and busy lives.
I'm not the type of parent who wants to force you to do as I want you to, but the type who wants you to do as you must - relying on your best instincts, acquired knowledge, and capacity to empathize with others.
Fret not if you do not know what to call me or are uncertain of just who I am. Many eons have separated us from one another. In spite of distance and time, I have never departed from you nor forsaken you.
This I promise - my call, my presence is closer to you than your very breath. Discover it and it will discover you.
Your loving God
P.S. I was going to wave my magic wand and make all this very understandable, but remember that I already did so at Calvary and on Easter morn!"
In all of our hearts and in every one of our congregations, let us get in touch with the One who is closer to us than our very breath, and whom upon our discovery, discovers us instead!
Letter writing-ly yours,
