 ICF Philadelphia

June 2013

 President's Message

Clare Sautter
Dear Friends,

Wow, the heat wave is here!  It's definitely an early start to the summer.  Before you leave for summer vacations, I wanted to mention an opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at ICF Philadelphia.

Once a year, we have a "corporate meeting" in which all members are invited (it's a bylaw thing!).  This year that meeting will be the same night as our monthly meeting, June 20, 2013 at 6:00pm.

It's a great way to learn more about our organization, including our sources of revenue and expenses.  It will be an informal and open dialogue. Please join us!

One more offer, the nomination process for Board members is an important aspect of our organization's growth.  I've learned a lot personally and professionally as a Board member (and certainly as President!).  If you have leadership skills (marketing, writing, technical abilities, developing programs, finding speakers, etc) and you have a desire to help advance the coaching profession - we need to talk!  While we call this a nomination process,  it may be more properly called a "self" nomination process.  Please don't wait to be asked.  Email or call me or another current or past Board member to explore your interests.  We'd love to hear from you!

Warm Regards,

Clare Sautter, ACC
President, ICF Philadelphia
P.S. If you are not yet a member of ICFP, this is a great time to join us!  For information on membership please contact membership@philadelphiacoaches.org.

Dinner Meeting: June 20

Pitch Perfect: Crafting & Delivering an Effective Elevator Speech

Speaker: Marjorie Brody, PCC, CSP, CPAE

Imagine that you are at a networking event. The room is filled with potential clients. And, whether it's in a one-on-one situation or with a group, people will ask, "So, tell me. What, exactly, do you do?"  You may know what you do and how you do it, and the value you bring to others. But, being able to articulate it on the spot can be daunting.

Even seasoned coaches may have difficultly crafting a 30-second, 1-minute or 2-5 minute pitch. And, once you do, you need to keep changing it as your business evolves. This interactive, experiential 75-minute workshop will help you prepare and present your "elevator pitch" so when it matters most you will be "pitch perfect."

Marjorie Brody, PCC, CSP, CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame, helps individuals achieve their potential through executive coaching, speaking and training. Marjorie is author of 20+ books, including Speaking is An Audience-Centered Sport and You Can't Do It Alone: Building Relationships for Career Success. Since 1983, BRODY has provided training programs, executive coaching and presentations in the areas of presentation power, facilitation & meeting effectiveness, writing for impact and relationship management. For more information: www.BrodyPro.com or 215-886-1688.

Annual Meeting of Members
If you're a member of ICF Philadelphia, please join us on June 20th for our corporate annual meeting. It will be just 1/2 an hour, from 5:30 - 6:00 pm, preceding our monthly dinner meeting.  It's a great way for members to learn more about our sources of revenue and expenses for 2013. We are not planning to vote on any measures, but bring your questions and ideas. We'd love to have input from members for future planning.
Did You Know???
Three Reasons to Join ICF Global
By Terri O'Donnell, ACC, CPCC, VP, Membership

Three great reasTerri O'Donnellons to join ICF Global
or renew your membership:

1) Build your credibility

Did you know that members of ICF Global (and the Philadelphia Chapter), have the opportunity to use the ICF logo on our websites, business cards, press releases, email signature and other promotional items? This positions YOU as a "professional coach" and builds your credibility. It differentiates YOU from your competition by being affiliated with a worldwide accrediting organization.

2) Build your business

Did you know, as part of your membership with ICF Global you can participate in the Coach Referral Service? That means YOU can get clients by being in the CRS directory.  Many people seeking coaching look to ICF to find a coach.  Are you there?  Who is missing finding you?

3) Get quality training and education

Did you know, if you're not a coach, and thinking about becoming one, ICF Global can narrow your search?  By completing an ICF-approved training program, you can be confident you are getting a quality education.

Did you know, you can get credentialed through ICF?  Imagine the client seeking a coach who has several choices.  One credentialed by an International Organization that indicates how rigorous your coach training has been, or one without.  Who do you think they'll choose?

Did you know, once you're credentialed through ICF Global (that's ACC, PCC or MCC), by attending the monthly ICFP dinner meeting, you can earn Continuing Coaching Education Units (CCEUs)?   An indication to those you serve that you are a professional who takes your coaching seriously by continuing to walk-the-talk through continued education.

Today's the day to join or renew your membership with ICF Global. Click here! to learn even more about the benefits of an ICF Global membership.

Attention Members:

Take action to prepare for our new ICFP Website coming July 1!

By Suzanne M Perry, MSOD, VP, Communications

Attention ICFP Members:
This month, in preparation for the launch of our new website on July 1, please take a few minutes to copy your current profile from our current website. (www.philadelphiacoaches.org) Save it as a word doc so you can easily copy and paste it into our new coach directory.

After July 1, log-in to our new website and create you coach profile in our beautiful new website. In addition, you will have two new opportunities: you can add your photo to your profile and be included in our new "Looking for a Speaker" directory in addition to "Looking for a Coach."

We plan to launch the new site on July 1, so don't delay! Data in the old site will not be accessible to users once the new site goes live.

Please note that in making the conversion, it was not possible to move over all the data in our coach profiles database now residing in our current website's "Hire a Coach" directory. So please act now if you want to use your current profile in the new site.

Please join me in recognizing the hard working ICFP New Website Team:  Blythe Hoyle, Laurie Gripshover-Taylor, Linda O'Neill, and yours truly!

If you have any questions about making a copy of your profile, feel free to email or call me or any member of the team. Many Thanks!

International Coaching Week Recap

By Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG

VP, Marketing

vertical banner It's only been one week since the end of this year's International Coaching Week celebration and we're already excitedly dreaming about next year! Before we head too far down that path, I believe it's important to pause and recognize what an incredible job the members of ICF Philadelphia did this year, bringing the impact and power of our profession to the public and sharing the benefits of coaching with our community in meaningful ways. It was both humbling and empowering to be a part of this significant global celebration! Be sure to stop by our Facebook page to see pictures of all the events: www.facebook.com/ICFPhilly

We often hear the phrase, "It takes a village..." and I'd have to agree that for a program of this size and scope, it was indeed the blending of the time and talents of many people -- new members and longtime members of our chapter -- to put together our weeklong celebration. My heartfelt thanks go out to each of our volunteers and to the ICF Philadelphia Board-for their unwavering support, all those of you who attended the events, and a special thank you to those who stepped up to lead. What fun we had getting to know each other through teamwork!

If the idea of being a part of the 2014 celebration intrigues you, we have just begun collecting names for next year's exploratory committee. Join us now as we build on this year's foundation, and set our sights towards an even more exciting week of events in 2014!

Please take a moment to read through the list of volunteers below.  You may even want to say a personal thank you next time you see one of them. All of these people made International Coaching Week 2013 possible, and we all had a great time doing this -- TOGETHER! We hope YOU'LL join us next year ~

With appreciation and sincere thanks, we'd like to recognize the 2013 ICW Team ~

ICF Global Update

Marjorie Johnson Marjorie Johnson, LCSW, PCC

Past President, ICF Philadelphia

Bob Whipple's recent post on Trust in the Linked in ICF coach's Forum stated that "trust needs to be the same on the inside as it appears on the outside."  My Linked in reply was that being an active member of our local  ICF  community offers  great opportunities  for professional development so we can encourage one another to be the very best coach and person we can be.

Trust is based on predictable behavior.  Whether we participate in the monthly diner meetings, attend a local community coffee, or serve on a committee or the Board, we can perfect our trustworthiness and professionalism by  being fully present, actively engaged  and  following  through on our commitments.

Being part of our community allows us to connect more mindfully with our identity as coaches.    We challenge our clients to connect their vision and goals with their values so they can be all they can be.    In order to stand in integrity we too need to be living the coaching values that we espouse.  The continuing education, fellowship, meetings and committee work available to us at ICF: Philadelphia draw us forward to deepen our own learning and to truly be a coach.

There are multiple ways to be actively engaged n our community.  I encourage you to join me, the Board members and committees to more fully grow into your identity as a coach.   In the coming months we'll have our August social and in the Fall we'll begin gearing up to begin the Nomination process for our 2014 Board.  Where will you participate with your fellow coaches so together we can become more skilled, authentic,  and trustworthy.

The "Extras" of Coaching

Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG

VP, Marketing
  ICF World

Have you read the May 2013 issue of Coaching World?

This issue highlights the "Extras" of Coaching. The opening line of the article reads: "94% of coaches said they offer one or more services in addition to coaching within their professional practice."  Be sure to take a look at page 5 of this issue -- it gives us a very useful infographic to break down these "extras".

Of the 94%, coaches are offering these additional services:

62% Consulting

60% Training

50% Facilitating

34% Mentoring

29% Teaching

17% Counseling

18% Other

The articles throughout this issue explore each of these "extras",how coaching skills weave throughout the specialty areas, where the professional boundaries are, and potential danger zones to avoid.  This candid look at the many choices of complementary professions can bring a new perspective when evaluating your service offerings. Additional services can enhance a coach's portfolio of offerings and allow the coach to serve more clients in more ways.

Taking inventory of your current skills and the professional services you offer will give you the raw data to use when crafting a clear message to use when marketing your coaching practice. After reading this issue of Coaching World, you may discover new ways that you can package or even re-package your professional experience to offer your services in a new and exciting way. With that clear picture, you can begin to share your portfolio of services via your website, social media, speaking engagements and professional networking opportunities.

We want to hear from you! Please be sure to send your marketing questions, comments and suggestions to: marketing@philadelphiacoaches.org

Member Spotlight:  Julie Cohen, PCC
By Patricia Weeks, ACC, RTTP

  Julie Cohen

Julie Cohen's father's advice to his teenage daughter was "always look in the direction you are going."  That advice has been, in part, responsible for her continuing and increasing success and renown in coaching.

Julie had intended a career in counseling but grew weary of the therapeutic model soon after graduate school.

Julie's first opportunity in coaching occurred in 1998 when she and two others working in corporate HR for Ernst and Young were asked to help solve growing attrition in the consulting group they supported.  Julie looked forward and saw an opportunity to make a difference.  Trained by 3 expert coaches, she was part of an effort to design a national coaching program to deal with losing their best and brightest. Julie left Ernst and Young in November 2000 having become an internal coach, just before the dot.com bust. Devastating to the industry, it also provided Julie with a lot of clients.

Julie notes that just as her coaching has evolved over the years, so too has the field. She observes that, inevitably, her clients' needs have reflected where she has needed to go. Currently she supports overwhelmed leaders who want greater professional effectiveness, personal satisfaction and their own mix of work-life balance.  In response, she has developed and delivers a well-respected training program, "Your Work, Your Life...Your Way: 7 Keys to Work-Life Balance."  She has delivered this program within many corporate organizations. In May, she delivered her first program for the general public. Looking forward, she says that this was one of the best days she has ever spent.  At the same time, she foresees less coaching and more training in her future.

Asked how she would use 2 weeks of free professional development, Julie would attend a 10 day meditation retreat.  She sees the retreat as a way of coming full circle: having supported her clients in work/life balance, she would continue to 'walk her talk' on her journey to become a truly balanced, integrated professional.

Asked what she is most proud of, Julie cites writing her book and developing her workshop.  She adds her satisfaction in being president of ICF Philadelphia  in 2003 and doing foundational work for the organization. As she pushed her son in a stroller through the second Coaching Expo in 2004, she undoubtedly was on to the next challenge, looking in the direction she was going.
