President's Message:
Dear Friends,
I recently spent a week in Gulf Shores, Alabama, a beautiful place anytime but especially so in April and May. Thought you might enjoy this picture of Lake Shelby at sunset. The first four months of my year have been very busy. It was nice to have some time to "lean back". Now that I am at my desk again, I'm turning my attention to all things ICFP, including International Coaching Week (ICW) which starts May 20th. Our chapter has put together a week long celebration of events designed to showcase the power of coaching.
Please consider attending some of the ICW events and inviting a business colleague, a nonprofit leader or anyone else you know who has curiosity about coaching. The events are affordable and feature incredible speakers/coaches. In our individual coaching practices, we will be doing our part during ICW in service to humanity flourishing. In addition, by giving our support to ICW, we help advance the profession of coaching in a bigger and broader way. We know first hand that coaching works. Here's our opportunity to spread the word. I invite you to "lean in" to our profession during this special week by attending the events and inviting others to attend as well. What a great way to show the world that "Coaching works"!
Warm Regards,
Clare Sautter, ACC
President, ICF Philadelphia

New Coach Member Buddy Program (NCMBP), aka: "Big Buddy/Little Buddy"
|
By Chris Coward, Program Coordinator
I am thrilled to report that the New Coach Member Buddy Program (NCMBP) initiated last year by Lisa Waldman and Jeff Kaplan is thriving!
What is this member initiative? The Big Buddy/Little Buddy program is an opportunity for a new member and an experienced member/coach of ICF Philadelphia Chapter to "buddy up" to help the newer coach "navigate" ICFP and/or the coaching world in general. The relationship is co-created by the big and little buddy to maximize the support being offered.
In April we started another round of NCMBP and I'm happy to report that we have five new pairings. If you missed that opportunity, the good news is that we are operating on a rolling admissions basis. If you are inclined to participate, please let me know and we can get you started fairly quickly when the timing is right for you. Currently I have a few Little Buddies awaiting assignment so we do need additional Big Buddies (and Little Buddies as we want to grow the program).
What's the commitment in this program? All we ask is that the Big and Little Buddies meet one time per month for six months. The meeting can be in person, on the phone, by Skype or whatever works best for each pair. Here are some testimonials from the last round:
-- "I found my Big Buddy, Laurie Gripshover-Taylor, to be well versed on a number of topics related to coaching. She was flexible and very willing to address my needs whether it was about a specific coaching issue, obtaining my certification hours, or discussing the role of Global. I felt very comfortable sharing my thoughts, hopes and concerns." Dolores Davis
-- "This was a very good experience - my buddy was a delight! I enjoyed interacting with and supporting my buddy on her coach journey." Laurie Taylor
If you would like to participate in this program, please contact me at ccoward@thehabitco.com or call 215-472-1572.

ICFP Marketing Minute

Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG
VP, Marketing
How is your balance?
Do you give and share more than promote?
What am I talking about?
For those of you active in social media, especially Twitter, you've probably followed someone unaware of social media etiquette. You know the type-the one who tweets and posts endlessly about their own "stuff", primarily promotional and rarely conversational or engaging. They put out a lot and interact very little.
Then there are those rare gems who seamlessly flow from providing truly interesting links to other people's articles and posts, occasionally adding a quote here and there for inspiration, a personal shout-out or acknowledgment, and then every once in a while-a post that is designed to inform or promote something about them or their company. That's where the 10-to-1 rule comes in handy. A good goal should be ten posts about someone or something else (of value) and one promotional post of something important to you or your business. That's an easy guide to follow, right?
How about Facebook? Well, a Facebook fan page is different than a personal page. People expect you to post "your stuff" on a personal page. On a business or fan page, it's wise to keep promotional posts in balance as well. About 50% of your posts should include something engaging and valuable beyond your own photos, special offers, promotions and campaigns.
There's so much rich material to share: inspiring videos, thoughtful blog posts by insightful thought leaders, links to spark creativity or an article that changes the way we think about a topic. Be sure and share those links and make the effort to start a conversation. The goal is finding a healthy balance between giving/sharing and promoting.
Remember-the most important part of social media is the SOCIAL part. Engaging, discussing, sharing, learning, connecting and interacting...these are all components of a highly enjoyable and successful social media endeavor. Give it a try-literally... Focus on giving and sharing when involved with social media. I think you'll be surprised by what you receive in return. Real connection with real people. That's one great reason to keep your balance on social media. What other reasons can you think of?

New ICFP Website Coming Soon!

| |
By Suzanne M Perry, MSOD, VP, Communications
Did you know that ICF Philadelphia will soon have a new website? This project has been in the works for many months and is quietly, steadily making headway. We expect to go live by July 1, if not before. Here's how you can help -- if you are a current member with a profile in the current ICF Philadelphia website -- make a copy of your profile. This will enable you to easily install the same profile in the new website. An important part of the new website will be an expanded capability for users to find a coach and hire a speaker. We are unable to move over our current member profiles. You will have the opportunity to create a new profile in the new site, or copy and paste from your current profile, if you have saved it.
Please join me in recognizing the hard working New Website Implementation Team: Blythe Hoyle, Laurie Gripshover-Taylor and Linda O'Neill. If you have any questions about making a copy of your profile, feel free to email or call me. Thanks!

| How to Use LinkedIn to Get Leads | |
By Lisa Tierney, CLSC
There are many tactics you should employ to generate leads on LinkedIn. Following are three quick tools & techniques to get you started:
1. Complete Your Profile. Aim for 100% completeness using these tools:
- An appropriate, professional profile photo to reflect the image you want to convey.
- A summary about yourself and what you can (and will) do for your clients. be aware of the ratio of "you" vs. "I"
- At least five skills on your profile. LinkedIn has standardized skills, and you can make your own. Once you come up with five, you will come up with more.
- Full education and work history. Your past school mates, professors, instructors, teachers, bosses, supervisors and colleagues could be your next referrals and clients.
2. Update and Engage. Update your profile often and include any written articles, white papers, etc. You can also integrate power-point presentations, or video testimonials from happy clients. Include a link to your blog and update it regularly. You can join your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts but for more freedom consider HootSuite or Posterous to schedule your posts.
Engage with your connections so that you remain top of mind. A simple status update such as: Working on a new book about shoes will be more effective by including details and a request for opinions: Working on a new book about women's shoes. Do you prefer heels or flats? Let me know and you could be featured in my forthcoming book!
3. Fish Where the Fish Are - In Groups! According to Alexa, LinkedIn is the 10th most visited website in the United States and the 12th most visited website worldwide. So there is a high probability that your target market is on LinkedIn - and most likely hanging out in a group. Want to reach Red Hat Certified Professionals in Iceland? There's a group for that! Interested in networking with early adopters of cloud computing in Sweden? That group is nearly 2,000 members strong.
Participate and comment in discussions, and start your own meaningful discussions. If you don't see a group that fits your interest exactly, create one and invite people to join! It's simple to do and you will have a rapt audience.

"Just Getting Started"
An interview with Suzanne M. Perry, MSOD
|
By Patricia Weeks, ACC, RTTP

One of the most revealing comments Suzanne Perry made at the outset of the interview for this column is that she is "just getting started." If stepping into the job of VP of Communications for ICF Philadelphia and starting her coaching business just weeks after retiring from sales last September is "just getting started," we have a lot to expect from Suzanne in the future.
Suzanne's entree to coaching came with her undergrad degree in Psychology. She expanded on this interest when studying at the University of Pennsylvania in the Organizational Dynamics program. There, Suzanne was exposed to principles of organizational and leadership development. Penn's program provided an academic underpinning to Suzanne's 12 year stint as a sales executive with Ceridian's LifeWorks division. Suzanne views her expansive two-week Org Dynamics course in London as her formal introduction to the world of coaching and consulting."I knew then that coaching and consulting would be my next career."
When asked "What is the one thing that has come as a surprise to you about coaching?" Suzanne responds "the importance of silence." She couples this observation with the importance of a good coaching question, which, she says "usually doesn't have an answer in the moment. A good question challenges a client's thinking, creating awareness and insight later that can be very powerful".
Suzanne loves to coach "anyone who is motivated to develop themselves". She believes that everyone has untapped potential. She has been working on articulating her coaching philosophy and shared a "work in progress" which she plans to use as content for her website. It reads, in part... "There is synchronicity and deep wisdom available to you. Most often it comes when we are open and striving, in tune with life's possibilities for us."
Given two weeks of free professional development, Suzanne would use it to study something that would actively challenge her and allow her to grow in coaching skills and insights. She loves to learn and acknowledges that there are many possibilities out there... it would be tough for her to choose!
Suzanne believes her greatest accomplishment has been raising her two college-age children. Her son recently graduated from the University of Tampa with degrees in music and accounting; and her daughter attends Boston University. In the world of work, she is pleased to help her clients achieve their goals and find inspiration in new directions. She coaches sales executives and those making career transitions. She also enjoys consulting with non-profits on marketing and communications. She spent 20 years with United Way prior to her work with Ceridian.
Parting thoughts: Suzanne observes that coaches are very open and generous in their giving to the community. She hopes ICF Philadelphia can continue to foster a collegial atmosphere. Clearly Suzanne models what she believes in.
