April 2013

Clare SautterPresident's Message:

Dear Friends,

One very real and tangible result from being an active member of our community is that we get to know some awesome coaches! And while the business of the committee meeting or volunteer effort is important, what I've noticed that I value even more is experiencing the deep connection that comes from working with talented people who care. And oh by the way, I've found that my coaching has developed as a result of the interactions I've experienced. That's two amazing benefits of my involvement with ICF Philadelphia!

As a Board, connected community has been on our minds. We know it's an important aspect of belonging. On a recent conference call with a group of members; as part of the conversation we each had the opportunity to practice deep, reflective listening. I felt 100% connected to everyone on the phone and there was a strong residual feeling after the call. It was an amazing feeling and I want more interactions like that!

I want to acknowledge and thank you for being who you are as individuals and as the group we call ICF Philadelphia! I invite you to join me in holding the concept of connected community the next time we're together at a monthly meeting. Send me an email and tell me about your experience and observation.

Take care and please remember that April is the month to join ICF Global or renew your membership. Here are two links that will help you do that.

April 18 Dinner Meeting:

Internal Coaching 2.0

        This meeting is sponsored by

BPSLogoWeb

Speakers:

James Houston, Tijen Genco, Alma Mathiasson

Moderator: Elizabeth C. Hechtman

When you think about internal coaching you probably think of people in human resources who - hopefully - have some coach specific training that enables them to work with individuals to improve their potential or help valued talent improve in areas where they're failing.

But internal coaching has out grown these parameters!

Enter the world of Internal Coaching 2.0 - where companies recognize that embedding coaching across disciplines enhances the organization's value by redefining human capital and how it's managed, aligning people and business strategies.

Creating such a coaching culture fosters innovative environments, employee development, and a focus on how people work together, improving relationships - between managers and direct reports, with supervisors, among team members, peer to peer and with clients. Companies cite increases in productivity, organizational strength, talent retention, cost reduction, job satisfaction and increased revenues. All of which are critical to maintaining profitability and a competitive edge in these lean and mean times.

Internal Coaching 2.0 has widened the profile of who's receiving coach training and how they're using the training within their organizations. For instance, project managers, team leaders, directors of training and development and many others are adding coach training and methodology, paid for by their company, to their functions.

In this panel presentation and conversation you'll meet trained and credentialed coaches working

in local major corporations. You will get to know how they're using their training and skills to add value to their company.

ICF
Global Update:
New Member Kit and Coach Training
Marjorie Johnson,  LCSW, ACC
ICF Philadelphia Past President

Marjorie JohnsonAs part of my role as Past President, one of my responsibilities is to be a chapter liaison to ICF Global. This year my Newsletter articles will focus on sharing global ICF coaching news that is relevant for you, our members. This month I continue to explore the ICF global website.

On my "tour" I rediscovered the "ICF New Member Kit." I am impressed by the benefits of ICF global membership which includes a job search site, a list of Accredited Training Programs, research that is relevant to your business branding and business planning and much more!  I invite you to take a look ...I think you'll be impressed too. Go to the members area and click on ICF New Member Kit at http://www.coachfederation.org

When I renewed my membership (all ICF global memberships expire March 31 every year) I reviewed the ICF website's information about membership and credentials. Membership and credentials are different and are handled by different departments in the Global office.

Your ICF Credential indicates that you have reached a definitive level of knowledge and experience regarding the definition of coaching, the ICF Core Competencies and ICF code of Ethics. As of April 1, 2013, individuals must have completed at least 60 hours of coach-specific training to remain a member in ICF global organization, in addition to paying membership dues and agreeing to abide by the ICF Code of Ethics. Coach-specific training is defined as:
  • Training from an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) or a program that has received the ICF Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) designation; or
  • Training that is specifically marketed as teaching coaching skills and behaviors, teaches how to apply technical skills in a coach-like manner, and transfers those skills in accordance with the ICF Core Coaching Competencies.

If you are interested in accredited coach training, I encourage you to come to the ICF: Philadelphia dinner meetings and talk with your fellow coaches and board members about their choices and experiences training programs. You can also review the Accredited Coach Training Programs on the ICF global website. Feel free to call me anytime to discuss the field of coaching and coach training. I'm happy to help.

Member Spotlight:

Deb Denis, MS, CPC, PCC

 by Pat Weeks, ACC, RTTP

Deb Denis' longtime friends know that persistence and uncompromising dedication are part of her DNA, what she brought into this world. However, it was a course on Coaching taken as part of her graduate program at Penn where Deb discovered the call to coach. That course provided Deb with a mentor, a new direction, and a group of fellow professionals she admires. Deb finds that in coaching, she is consistently amazed with the ability of others to dig deeply, be brave and vulnerable, and realize change to a degree that they never thought was possible.

Deb has found that she loves to coach people who aren't afraid to dream big or, if they are, persist in working to get there anyway. She muses that the clients who have the hardest time letting go of beliefs that don't serve them well (and push her buttons) are the ones she has the hardest letting go. She passionately wants to help people get unstuck and help them see other options, other possibilities. She loves the acronym YAHOO - you always have other options.

Given two weeks of free professional development, Deb would use that support to do more with Coaches without Borders, a 100% volunteer effort to bring coaching to underserved areas of the world. She hungers as well for partners who can help her, in her words, "be more effective in growing this important work in the world."

In 2010, Deb decided that she wanted "to be a lighter presence in the world" and to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, a peak reached by only 41% of those who attempt it. No one, including Deb, thought she could do it, but Deb knew that she could no longer challenge others to move through their fears if she didn't move through her own. In this way and many others, Deb has earned the right to use the words she lives by: "Anything is possible."

She is grateful for the gift of community in ICF Philadelphia and invites readers to her website www.DebDenis.com. Deb's experience on Kilimanjaro is captured in her book, published in 2012, "Kilimanjaro, One Woman's Journey to the Roof of Africa and Beyond."

Only 7 weeks until International Coaching Week!(ICW): May 20-26!

What Members are Saying...

Terri O'Donnell, ACC, CPCC, VP, Membership

Here's what some of our members are saying about ICF Philadelphia:

Vivienne says...I joined ICF Philadelphia because I believe ICF is a worthy and credible organization. I'm coming back to the dinner meetings because I believe I will be able to gain useful knowledge from the speakers and forum. I appreciate the opportunity to learn about the many facets of coaching as a business from fellow coaches.

Norman says...I've been a member of ICF International for several years, and just moved into the Philadelphia area 15 months ago.My coaching practice has a significant online component, which means that I work on my own most of the time.Joining ICF Philadelphia allows me to have contact with other coaches, which stimulates creativity, helps me learn new business practices, and builds my network and acquire clients.

Deb recently rejoined. Why did I rejoin ICF Philly?  I can tell you: it was the energy of the people for the plan: from contagious energy at the Bahama Breeze

event to seeing the clear dedication of the members at the February meeting, a commitment to volunteerism, MCC-level demos, to reconnecting with colleagues I admire and getting to know others. It's an exciting time for our profession and chapter, and I'm grateful to be a part of this high-caliber community. Thanks, ICF Philly!

Ken says...I have been a full time member since I started PACA/ICFP. I am looking to relate to serious coaches who are professional and I attend meetings that can add to my mastery or expand my horizons.

Pass this on to other coaches you know looking to be part of a community of local coaches and invite them to an upcoming ICF Philadelphia dinner meeting.

I welcome your thoughts on the value of your ICF Philadelphia membership. Please email  to membership@philadelphiacoaches.org.

ICFP Marketing Minute

Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG

VP, Marketing

To be in service to humanity flourishing. ~ This is our ICF Global Vision.

As individual coaches, our personal brand message is enhanced by the ability to earn and hold internationally recognized professional coaching credentials. As ICF members we adhere to a Code of Ethics and pledge to conduct ourselves in alignment with these standards. By doing this, our ICF membership adds value through building trusting, professional relationships with our clients and the public.

International Coaching Week is May 20-26 and an ideal time to join with other professional coaches in a collective voice to educate the public about our profession. Aligning ourselves with the ICF message gives credibility and consistency to the definition and value of coaching--in our community, and in the world.

In recent remarks, the 2013 ICF Global President Dr. Damian Goldvarg, MCC said: "I joined ICF because I wanted to be a part of the biggest global association that set the ethical and professional standards for coaching. Over the years, I have benefited from the credibility gained as a member of ICF in several particular ways..." He goes on to identify four key areas: Networking, Education, Research, and Leadership.

So, how can you tap into the power of the ICF vision (and brand) in marketing your coaching business?

  • Tell potential clients that you are a member of ICF; explain the Code of Ethics; define the rigorous training and assessments required to achieve your credential. These issues distinguish you from untrained individuals in the marketplace.
  • Stay informed of research conducted by ICF and read member communications
  • Download the monthly ICF Fact Sheet to use with prospective clients
  • Add the new ICF Philadelphia and global logo to your website
