March 21 Dinner Meeting:

Reality Marketing - How to Drive the Right Clients to You

Eric Keiles

For too long, business owners, entrepreneurs and marketers have blindly followed the expensive advice of traditional advertising agencies, believing there was no real marketing alternative available. But mass marketing outbound tactics like radio spots, TV commercials and billboards are not the only way to promote your company and can often be cost prohibitive. In fact, with the recent shift in buyer behavior, these traditional tactics don't perform like they used to. There's a better, more effective way to put your business in front of the right buyers.

As service professionals, coaches face a unique set of challenges based on specific industry risks and company goals. There are four basic professional services marketing needs you must fulfill in order to be successful:

  • You need to set yourself apart
  • You need to get found on the internet
  • You need to convert website visitors into leads and,
  • You need to turn leads into new clients

Eric Keiles, Owner of Square 2 Marketing, will introduce you to the concept Reality Marketing™ an approach that he co-created with his partner, which helps small and medium-sized businesses to utilize cost-effective marketing tactics to achieve dramatic growth. This game-changing approach to inbound marketing teaches you how to think differently about your business, stand out from the competition and create the kind of targeted, track-able strategy-driven tactics that draw clients to your door. Eric will present an overview of the changing landscape of marketing and provide some tips for how to build your practice in this new world.

About the Speaker

Eric Keiles, Owner and Co-Founder, Square 2 Marketing; and author of Reality Marketing Revolution, is a leading sales and marketing strategist focused on pioneering a new breed of business solutions. Eric, along with his business partner, Mike Lieberman, coined the concept, Reality Marketing™.   They are leading the revolution in how entrepreneurs change the way they think about marketing their companies.  Marketing Sherpa has called the duo "original and contrarian marketers".

Their best selling book, Reality Marketing Revolution is their thesis on the changing world of small business marketing.  They are spreading the word through their concepts of the "Red & Blue Test", "Being Remarkable" and the "Cup of Coffee Challenge". Verne Harnish, The "Growth Guy", named the book, the "best how-to marketing book ever."

Global Update:

Advancements in Self-Regulation
Marjorie Johnson,  LCSW, ACC
ICF Philadelphia Past President

Marjorie Johnson

As part of my role as Past President, one of my responsibilities is to be a chapter liaison to ICF: Global. This year my Newsletter articles will focus on sharing global ICF coaching news that is relevant for you, our members.  This month's article is focused on global advancements in promoting professionalism and self regulation of coaching and on the importance of ICF membership.

ICF Global has members in over 104 countries and actively cooperates with other global professional coaching organizations to advance the professionalism of our industry. To this end,   on Nov. 21, 2012, the International Coach Federation, The Association for Coaching (AC), and The European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC), joined forces to create the Global Coaching & Mentoring Alliance.  This strategic alliance is designed to advance the professional coaching industry and to promote our industry's self-regulation.

In the U.S., ICF membership and credentials are increasingly recognized as essential to elevating coaching to a true profession.  In fact, a government agency recruiter recently wrote to our chapter asking specifically for ICF credentialed coaches. He stated "ICF competencies, ethical guidelines and hour requirements per level are consistent with the skills, assumptions and experience we are interested in and prefer."

Although ICF Global membership is not required to join ICF Philadelphia, we  continue to support you in understanding and meeting the ICF's Minimum Education Requirements (MER) and will continue to deliver CEU approved programs  for those who are already credentialed.

Your ICF Global membership expires March 31.  As you consider renewing, here are a few reminders of the value membership provides:

  • ICF Global is the largest, most universally  respected credentialing  and membership organization of coaches.
  • Keeps your ICF credential active.
  • Keeps you up to date on ICF and  other coaching  news via  newsletter, e-mail and  the website.
  • Access to global partners with discounted services.
  • Shared ethics and standards.
  • Resources like the Career Center and the  ICF Reciprocal Peer Coaching program.

Share Your Success Stories for International Coaching Week (ICW), May 20-26!

ICS photo

Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG, VP, Marketing

The ICW Team at ICF Philadelphia is collecting YOUR coaching client success stories! To educate the public about the value of working with a professional coach and to acknowledge the results and progress made through the coaching process, we want to share YOUR client success stories with the community!

Our plan is to publish your success stories (approximately 300-500 words in length) in the ICF Philadelphia News Blog. Each coach submitting a story may also send in a picture -- you alone, or with your client -- to publish along with the story. (Special note: If you submit a story using a client's real name, you'll need to get permission first.) If you'd like to see a published success story, go to the ICF Philadelphia News Blog www.icfphiladelphia.wordpress.com and click on the "Coaching Success Stories" link on the right.

We are envisioning a week-long celebration with groups of coaches holding local events at various venues throughout the region. In addition, these local events will get lots of promotional support too! We want to spread the good news about coaching and the GREAT coaches in our area -- and that means YOU!

ICW can be a wonderful time of celebration and a GREAT opportunity to expand our reach and invite the public to learn more about coaching. We are looking for coaches who are interested in joining in the fun, coordinating or participating in a local event during the week. It could be speed coaching, a coaching demo, book store or coffee shop event, perhaps a lunch and learn-- there are so many options that you can create in YOUR local area.

The ICW Team is also developing relationships with partner organizations and we're looking for coaches LIKE YOU to act as a liaison.

The time is NOW to speak up and say how YOU would like to share in the celebration this year. To learn more about how you can create or find an event in YOUR area, contact: Laurie Taylor,  marketing@philadelphiacoaches.org

What Members Want from ICF

Terri O'Donnell, ACC, CPCC, VP, Membership

I recently had the opportunity to participate in an ICF Global conference call with coaches from around the world who are ICF chapter leaders.  Coaches on the call were from Australia, Hong Kong, UK, China, India and the states, to name just a few.  The call was life-changing for me in my new role as VP of Membership.  I realized just how connected we all are, while coming to the realization of how powerful we are as coaches.

"Our purpose is to be in service of humanity flourishing." This message from ICF Global helps us remember how important our own growth is to the coaching relationship.  The conference call discussion centered around the four things that ICF Global views as the benefits members' most seek:

1) CONNECT ME: with other coaches and coaching professionals within the industry. A way to accomplish that is to attend the monthly Dinner Meetings regularly and reaching out to those you don't know.

2) EXPAND ME: Whether you are seasoned or new to coaching, growth is fundamental to us because we have to teach it daily to our clients.  What are you doing to stretch yourself in the areas of professional development around coaching knowledge, skills, self-awareness, and coaching competency?

3) VALIDATE ME: The primary way ICF does this is through credentialing. Feedback throughout the credentialing process is crucial as it can change the way we coach.  Are you credentialed or thinking about it?  ICF provides guidance and resources at both the global and chapter level.

4) BUILD MY CREDIBILITY: ICF provides that for you through:

  • world class credentialing
  • being a preferred resource for the business community
  • creating alliances with educators
  • establishing profession entry thresholds
  • creating global strategic alliances
I welcome your thoughts on how ICF Philadelphia is delivering these benefits and how we can do it even better. Email your thoughts to membership@philadelphiacoaches.org. We'd love to hear from you!

ICFP Marketing Minute

Laurie Gripshover Taylor, ACC, CUCG

VP, Marketing

Marketing seems to be on everyone's mind these days. Some coaches thoroughly enjoy marketing and they have a steady flow of clients lining up to be coached. Does this sound like you? Well, perhaps you wish it did!

Marketing is a word often muttered under our breath, maybe even with our heads shaking from side to side. That makes me curious... Do we really know the definition of marketing?

Wikipedia:

Marketing is the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers.

Mashable:

Marketing is the way companies interact with consumers to create relationships that are beneficial to both parties.

BusinessDictionary.com:

Marketing is based on thinking about the business in terms of customer needs and their satisfaction.

American Marketing Association:

Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

When you thoughtfully consider those definitions, how does your perspective shift? The words that jump out at me are: value, service, communicating, relationships, beneficial, and satisfaction. Maybe some of these words hold great meaning for you as well and can give you new energy to rethink how you approach marketing your coaching services.

The theme of the February 2013 issue of Coaching World was, "Leveraging Technology for Your Coaching Career" - http://bit.ly/14WWesH. Throughout this issue you'll find an abundance of information on how to use technology and social media to connect with people, communicate your value, and enter into relationships of mutual satisfaction. It actually makes marketing FUN! Check it out; you'll be glad you did.

Want to raise awareness of your services? The blog post "5 basic tips for social media growth" will put you on the path to social success - http://bit.ly/X8cEKr. The more we learn and practice our marketing skills, the more able we'll be to expand our reach and our contribution to humanity flourishing.
