February 21 Dinner Meeting:

Creating Performance Breakthroughs with Self-Coaching

Howard GuttmanWith pressure mounting to accelerate performance within today's organizations, there is an urgent need, especially at mid-levels, for people to take charge of their own success. Despite HR budget cuts and a lack of coaching support, high-potential employees below the senior-executive level are expected to work harder, meet ever-higher goals, and broaden their capabilities to assume greater responsibly for future leadership roles.

Howard M. Guttman is a leading executive coach, business consultant, and author, whose latest book, Coach Yourself to Win, advocates a unique, cost-effective "self-coaching" approach in which high-potential employees create their own performance breakthroughs. To do this, they must assume full accountability for mastering a disciplined self-coaching process and for achieving the goals they set for themselves. In "Creating Performance Breakthroughs Through Self-Coaching," you'll learn how to provide leadership and structure for up-and-coming employees wanting to take up their game; the questions to ask to determine self-coachability; and Howard Guttman's 7-step self-coaching process that will help you and those whose development you are responsible for to generate positive, lasting personal and professional change. Please Note: Mr. Guttman will sign your book after the presentation if you bring it along!

About the Speaker:

Howard M. Guttman is principal of Guttman Development Strategies, Inc. (GDS), a Mount Arlington, NJ-based management consulting firm specializing in executive coaching; building horizontal, high-performance teams; strategic and organizational alignment; and management development training.

GDS's clients include Bloomberg LP; Colgate-Palmolive; John Hancock; Johnson & Johnson; L'Oréal USA; Mars, Inc.; Novartis; Sears; and Walmart.

Mr. Guttman's most recent book is Coach Yourself to Win: 7 Steps to Breakthrough Performance on the Job and in Your Life. He is also the author of Great Business Teams: Cracking the Code for Standout Performance and When Goliaths Clash: Managing Executive Conflict to Build a More Dynamic Organization.

Congratulations to the 2012 ICFP Volunteers of the Year!

At our January meeting, we recognized four volunteers who helped make ICFP an energetic, dynamic, resourceful organization for you throughout 2012. Just in case you missed the meeting, here are our 2012 Volunteers of the Year:

Susan Race Volunteer of the Year: Jill Magerman
Please see the Member Spotlight article below about Jill Magerman's outstanding contributions to ICFP. Congratulations Jill!

Board Member of the Year: Ginger Jarrett
Ginger Jarrett

Ginger Jarrett has served ICFP as Vice President, Corporate Relations, for the past 2+ years. In her role as Program Chair for our 2011 Conference, Ginger was a major contributor to the phenomenal success of the Conference. She solicited, selected, managed, and welcomed over 25 top notch speakers. Going always beyond the call of duty, she also recommended that conference attendees contribute to the US Marine's Toys for Tots program.  She also enrolled others to support the conference in many ways. Her creativity, project management skills, leadership, thoughtfulness, integrity, and dedication were outstanding. She covered every detail tirelessly and picked up additional responsibilities when necessary.

In 2012 she organized and implemented a successful pro bono coaching program enlisting 23 coaches with executives and staff members from 5 non-profit community organizations. Called the Community Coaching Connection, the project once again reflects the dedication and deep professionalism of this very special ICFP Board member.

Ms Congeniality: Lisa Waldman
Lisa Waldman "My mission in life is to help empower others to live the lives they were born to live. I work with clients to help them identify and overcome obstacles or beliefs holding them back; identify career paths they were created to follow, not just jobs that pay the bills; and to identify and achieve personal goals."

In 2012, Lisa worked closely with Jeff Kaplan on Big Buddy/Little Buddy program development and the management of this program's kick-off.
She is a regular cheerful greeter at the ICFP Monthly Meeting registration desk. She is a champion of new and prospective coaches at meetings: welcoming, inclusive, helpful, a connector; cheerful, encouraging, and willing!

New Member of the Year: Terri O'Donnell, ACC, CPCC
Terri O'Donnell With this award winner, you can follow the Yellow Brick Road.  Terri O'Donnell joined ICFP just one year ago... and quickly became an integral part of our organization. She helped with the membership committee and now serves as our Membership Wizard, newly elected VP of Membership. In her
coaching practice, she wants her clients to realize that like the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion, they had their power all along! The name of her firm: Yellow Brick Road Coaching.

Member Spotlight: Jill Magerman, Susan Race Volunteer of the Year
JillMagermanNEW

By Patricia Weeks, ACC, RTTP

Jill Magerman is immediately notable for her enthusiasm and energy in everyarena. Before even starting her coaching training, she joined ICF Philadelphia more than 5 years ago after meeting and being inspired by a long time member and former president, Julie Cohen. A year later she chose to receive her training through Coaches Training Institute and soon after she became a board member of ICF- Philly and has been a mentor to many new members.

Jill comes to coaching from having served as the executive director of two different non-profit organizations and had been a social worker for several years.

Jill sees coaching as life changing. As she puts it, "it accelerates an already good life." Jill sees coaching as vital both to her personal and professional growth: it creates an environment of wanting to bring other people up and supporting them instead of tearing them down.

During her initial training with CTI, Jill met two amazing women who were also just beginning their coaching training. Although she had no premonition at the time, that meeting marked the beginning of a strong personal and professional partnership.  These three certified coaches are the co-founders of Atrio Professional Life Coaches ( www.atriolifecoaches.com, a company that specializes in designing and delivering creative and customized workshops as well as coaching.

Jill loves working with people who have an itch that needs to be scratched and are motivated to make changes. A new path for Jill is her certification as a Life Cycle Celebrant, and an ordained non-denominational minister.  She enjoys creating personalized, unique ceremonies, specializing in weddings. Jill loves helping people to stay in touch with their present life, celebrate life events, working with them so that they get more out of and appreciate whatever point on the life cycle they are in. She hopes to expand her practice to using more ceremonies in her coaching as well as performing a variety of life event ceremonies.

Jill identifies the pinnacle of her professional life to date as the point that her partners and she took a risk and responded to an RFP for a CTI Summit. "Our workshop, 'It Takes a Village', was selected and we were the opening event for a sold out summit."

Asked what words she would offer to live by, Jill responds: "Pause, cause life's too short" - she has a talk she has given "Life's Too Short For Uncomfortable Underwear." She notes that the older she gets more she agrees with the truism "life is not a dress rehearsal."

In addition to her other activities, Jill continues to be involved with ICF-P and is the CPO, Chief Play Officer.  Family is paramount in Jill's life and is an empty nester and lives with her supportive husband of 28 years.

Calendar Alert:  International Coaching Week (ICW), May 20-26!

Good news - ICFP is organized and excited about this year's celebration! Some of you may be wondering what all the excitement is about...what IS International Coaching Week?

"ICW is a designated time each year for coaches and clients to educate the public about the value of working with a professional coach and to acknowledge the results and progress made through the coaching process."  (via ICFHQ)

Wow-what a GREAT opportunity to expand our reach and invite the public to learn more about coaching!

Our local response to this global celebration is:

"ICF Philadelphia invites the Greater Philadelphia region to learn about the value of working with a professional coach and the results made through the coaching process. Coaching WORKS!"

We are envisioning a week-long celebration, groups of coaches holding local events throughout the week at various venues throughout the region. In addition, these local events will get lots of promotional support too! We want to spread the good news about coaching and the GREAT coaches in our area-that means YOU!

We are looking for coaches who are interested in joining in the fun of participating in a local event during Coaching Week-whether is be speed coaching, a coaching demo, book store event, lunch and learn-there are so many options-and in YOUR local area.

The time is NOW to speak up and say how YOU would like to share in the celebration this year. To learn more about how you can find an event in YOUR area, contact: Laurie Taylor, marketing@philadelphiacoaches.org
