January 2013

President's Message:

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!  To ring in the New Year, I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and record a video message. This month I talk about three "tests" the Board will use when evaluating decisions we make in 2013. The video is less than 3 minutes. I hope you will take the time to watch it. If you'd like to comment feel free and/or you are always welcome to call or email me.

Here's the link to my video message:
January President's Message

I recorded it "medium size" - should be okay for most computers. Next time I will record a mobile version so it will be a little more manageable if people want to view it from their phones etc.

I welcome your comments. Thank you for being a part of ICF Philadelphia! Wishing you a healthy, safe, productive and rewarding 2013!

January 13 Dinner Meeting:
Live Coaching with the Masters

Speakers: Kenneth Abrams &

Dr. Felice Tilin

Ken Abrams

Felice Tilin

Coaching is a combination of skill, science and art. Masterful coaching is a demonstration of proficiency coupled with experience and tossed together with the presence to dance in the moment with the client. By popular demand and in response to positive reviews our program will showcase two Live Coaching demonstrations and debriefs. Our ICF credentialed coaches have stepped up to coach "clients" chosen right from the audience on the spot. They're prepared to coach whatever personal or professional issues their volunteer clients raise. So come observe as two seasoned coaches with different niches and different styles bring their "A" game to our ICFP Meeting in January for the benefit of your learning .

Feb. Dinner Meeting Sneak Preview: Creating Performance Breakthroughs Through Self-Coaching

It's not too soon to mark your calendar for Thursday, February 21st 2013 - 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM for another exciting meeting.

With pressure mounting to accelerate performance within today's organizations, there is an urgent need, especially at mid-levels, for people to take charge of their own success. Despite HR budget cuts and a lack of coaching support, high-potential employees below the senior-executive level are expected to work harder, meet ever-higher goals, and broaden their capabilities to assume greater responsibly for future leadership roles.

Our speaker will be Howard M. Guttman, a leading executive coach, business consultant, and author, whose latest book, Coach Yourself to Win, advocates a unique, cost-effective "self-coaching" approach in which high-potential employees create their own performance breakthroughs. To do this, they must assume full accountability for mastering a disciplined self-coaching process and for achieving the goals they set for themselves. In "Creating Performance Breakthroughs Through Self-Coaching," you'll learn how to provide leadership and structure for up-and-coming employees wanting to take up their game; the questions to ask to determine self-coachability; and Howard Guttman's 7-step self-coaching process that will help you and those whose development you are responsible for to generate positive, lasting personal and professional change. Please Note: Mr. Guttman will sign your book after the presentation if you bring it along!

A new year and a new you!

By Brenda March, CPC, ELI - MP
ICF Philadelphia Engagement Coordinator

If 2013 is your year to expand your network of coaches to cultivate new strategic alliances or just to learn more about the vibrant coaches who are members of ICFP, volunteering is a great way to do it!

I am currently serving as engagement coordinator and would love to help you find the best way for you to become more engaged and expand your network of like minded coaches.

We are currently in need of the following positions:

  • Librarian - We need a person to maintain & track our collection of books, CD's and other resources. The library will be stored at our new monthly meeting facility so no need to store and transport the library.
  • Marketing - Our new VP of Marketing is looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers to support the marketing effort. A great chance to showcase your marketing talents.
  • Communications - Join the Communications team and take your pick - you can write articles for the newsletter; coordinate community coffees, take photographs of our monthly meetings and/or help keep our social media up-to-date. There's a lot to do to keep members and the community informed of ICFP's many activities.
  • Sponsorships - Use your networking and sales skills to reach out to enlist monthly meeting, newsletter and website advertising sponsors.
  • Conference Volunteers - our 2013 coaching conference provides many ways to show your talents and help make it the best conference ever!
  • Corporate Coaching SIG Facilitator - This role can be fulfilled via conference call or an in-person meeting prior to the monthly meeting. The facilitator brings topics of interest to the group related to coaching in a corporate environment. Help create this opportunity for sharing resources and expertise for coaches involved in corporate/executive coaching.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities or would like to get involved but are not sure how just yet, please contact me by phone or email. My contact information is provided below. There are jobs big and small waiting for you at ICFP! I look forward to hearing from you!

An Exemplary Effort: Our Community Coach Connection
Ginger Jarrett

Thanks to Ginger Jarrett, ICFP's VP for Corporate Affairs, who initiated the Community Coach Connection; 22 coaches are actively engaged with 23 coachees from five non-profits:

  • Canine Partners for Life
  • DanceUP
  • accessAbilities
  • Plays and Players
  • Miller Rothlein Dance company

Their engagements will last 6 months. Many of the active coaches have already provided feedback to Ginger about the deep satisfaction and sense of accomplishment they feel in providing pro bono coaching.

Kudos to Ginger who led this effort. Her work was significant, involving writing the non-profit application and the coach application, recruiting coaches from ICFP and other ICF Chapters, including New Jersey and Minnesota, and holding briefings to kick-off CCC to ensure coaches and coachees had a clear idea of the program's expectations.

Ginger's  efforts have attracted the interest of ICF Chapter leaders in Toronto and South Carolina.

This past September, Ginger was honored by her company with the Olympus Visionary Volunteer Award. In addition to the $400 grant ICFP received last year from Olympus for Ginger's leadership role in our 2011 conference, ICFP received another $100 check from Olympus in recognition of her exemplary service.
