| President's Message: Thank you for Celebrating and Strengthening our Community

Dear Friends,
We have so much to be thankful for! I was very excited to learn about the record turnout for our October meeting at our new monthly meeting venue. I can't tell you how much I missed being with you! (Due to recent back surgery, I am unable to move around much for a few weeks, but I hope to see you in November.) Thank you Beryl Byles for your inspirational remarks and many, many thanks to Clare, Rosie, Jeff, Elizabeth, Laurie, Jill and Suzanne - and everyone who made the evening a great success. What a great group you are!
ICF Philly is very fortunate to have many fully engaged and hard-working members. There's a great opportunity coming up to show our appreciation. Nominations for volunteers of the year are due Dec 1. We have three new awards -- see Jill's article below. If you think it's too tough to select among all the great volunteers we have working for us - nominate as many as you like! There's no limit to the number of people you can nominate.
Our theme this year, "Celebrating and Strengthening Our Community," is being brought to life by many new initiatives. I want to give a shout out of special thanks to:
- Ginger Jarrett, VP of Corporate Affairs, for leading us in a vibrant effort to give back to our community with the Community Coach Connection. There are 23 coaches engaged with five local non-profits. Way to go Ginger and team!
- Rosie Elliot, VP of Membership, for her work initiating Coaching Circles, giving newer coaches the opportunity to be practicing coaching skills with more experienced coaches.
- Jeff Kaplan, Past President, for his work initiating Big Buddies/Little Buddies, a program that matches new members with a long-time ICFP member for a 6-month mentoring engagement.
- Suzanne Perry, VP of Communications, for initiating Community Coffees, monthly, informal gatherings for networking and deepening our connections.
ICFP truly has a lot to be thankful for this year. I hope you will take advantage of all we have to offer and count this wonderful professional association among your many blessings as you celebrate Thanksgiving with your loved ones later this month. I know I will be counting all of you among mine. I wish you the happiest of holidays and hope to see you soon!
With heartfelt thanks,
Marjorie

November Dinner Meeting:
Navigating Back to YOU!
| |
Speaker: Harriet Stein

In this program you will learn how to quickly and easily navigate back to yourself...your life... in this very moment. We all face the challenges of being connected, but just because we move through life with so many electronic devices; this does not mean we are "connecting."
During this program you will experience the practice of mindfulness meditation, and reflect upon the rationale for living in the moment. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the moment-by-moment awareness of your mood, your thoughts, and your body sensations. You will learn practical ways you can immediately reconnect with yourself, with colleagues, friends, and family.
A workshop attendee emailed me after a program and noted," I immediately felt my shoulders loosen up ('I carry all of my stress in my neck and shoulders'), and slept very well that night. " I once heard it said, "We may not be listening to our bodies, but our bodies are listening to us." In this session you will learn how to listen to your body, and about the relationship between our thoughts and our bodies.
And briefly hear about over the more than 2500 papers published over the last three decades addressing mindfulness interventions that demonstrate the positive effects of this practice on blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, anxiety disorders, chronic pain, back discomfort, any more.
You are already aware of the toll being "connected" 24/7 has taken on you, so why not experience what "connecting" to yourself is like? Come and learn how to navigate back to you!
Harriet Stein began her career as a registered nurse who entered the Pharma world after 12 years working in a hospital setting as a clinician and patient advocate. She has worked in the pharmaceutical industry in clinical research and training for the past 18 years. She has studied Mindfulness extensively; including participation in coursework led by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society. Harriet has completed advanced teacher's training at the Jefferson University Mindfulness Institute in Philadelphia. Harriet holds a BS in Nursing and MS in Health Administration.

What Members are saying about our October Dinner Meeting...
| |
Congratulations to the team that put last night's event together and that initiated the change to our new location! Last night's event was amazing, starting with being greeted as I got out of my car and directing me to the new location. The new location felt like it had more expansive energy - good thing! I think we had close to a record turnout . . . including Phyllis Sisenwine [one of our founding members!], and many more! Beryl Byles shared her research on authentic leadership with inspiring thoughts that we can apply to ourselves and work with our clients. Look forward to hearing about Mindfulness at November's event, Navigating Back to YOU with Harriet Stein.
Gerrie Dresser, PCC - Professional Certified Coach Executive l Personal Brand Coach for High-Achieving Leaders
I would like to echo Gerrie's sentiments about last night. A terrific meeting at a great new venue. Congrats to the ICF-Phila board and team of dedicated coaches who make these meetings seem so effortless. It was great to see so many familiar faces as well as to meet some new folks. I love what Beryl said about how we embrace change...so true!

Member Profile:
Elizabeth C. Hechtman, MS, PCC, CPCC, VP, Education, ICFP
| |
Elizabeth Hechtman's coaching career arose from loss. Trained as a therapist, she became dismayed when therapy stopped being about self-actualization due to the advent of managed care. She lost a once loved profession and didn't know what to do next. A friend engaged a coach. Her friend shared, "I think this is what you are." She explained her coach was using a structured, effective methodology, which was very different from anything she'd experienced in therapy. But nothing moved Elizabeth until she witnessed her friend's transformation. Elizabeth figured maybe her friend's coach could help her through her dissatisfaction with her current career as a therapist.
She hired him, got lots of help and found her new career by the end of the first month as a client. Immediately she signed up for full time training and certification. Shortly afterward she obtained her PCC. Eventually she transferred all her therapy clients to coaching, and has now 30 years in the business. Elizabeth feels very fortunate to have found not one but two fulfilling careers. Elizabeth's ideal clients are those willing to develop a partnership with her. She loves her work, loves the clients she works with and loves learning and growing - the kind of love that grows out of being caring, attached to others and concerned with creating meaning and value for her clients. If she could have two weeks of free professional development, her dream would be 75% sitting at the feet of coaching giants, listening to them coach, questioning and being questioned in the art of brilliant, masterful coaching. The remaining time, she'd like to advance her marketing skills, learning from top earning coaches. In a life filled with accomplishments, Elizabeth is proudest of raising her son. As a single mother, she is proud of creating and sustaining both a fulfilling home life and a satisfying career for 30 years.
Asked what thoughts she would like to leave us with, she notes that it's important to remember the difference we make in people's lives - our clients are transformed and they bring their transformation into the world to their families, friends, co-workers and communities. Finally, she appreciates being involved with ICF Philadelphia. The quality, talent and generosity of the organization and members are very meaningful for her.

Reinvigorate your Coaching Practice

Reinvigorate your Coaching Practice with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) this December:
By Robert Schwarz, PsyD, Executive Director of ACEP
As the Executive Director of the
Professional Skills 1. EFT is classified as an energy psychology (EP) modality - a highly focused, evidence-supported method of combining energy work with effective coaching that provides rapid relief from negative emotions and limiting beliefs that impede client performance and success.
This two-day workshop on December 1-2 is open to all coaches, therapists and helping professionals interested in developing a basic foundation in this technique. It is also the gateway to ACEP's EFT Certification Program. Designed and directed by Tina Craig, this is as close as you are going to get to the original teachings of EFT founder, Gary Craig.
As a coaching method, EFT helps clients remove blocks to performance that stem from emotional interferences from the past. As clients focus on specific distressing memories that support limiting beliefs, practitioners walk clients through a process of tapping on acupuncture meridian points. After a session, clients commonly report reductions in symptoms, new insights, cognitive and emotional shifts.
I have been incorporating EP techniques in my psychology and coaching practice since 1996 and have never looked back. By engaging the cognitive, somatic and energetic aspects of a client, these elegant tools allow for not only rapid relief of distress, but support clients in swiftly clearing away obstacles to reaching goals and improving performance.
