Lev Friedman Joins TST as Rabbinic Intern
|
Lev Friedman, a student rabbi entering his fifth of six years at Hebrew College, Newton, is joining the Shir Tikva staff for 2016-17. He will assist Interim Senior Rabbi Douglas Kohn and Cantor Hollis Schachner with services, Torah study and life cycle events.
Rabbinic Intern Friedman has chosen the rabbinate as his second career. Some of you might recognize him as the former owner of Kolbo Fine Judaica, the famous Judaica store in Brookline. A year after selling Kolbo he visited his daughter Shoshana in Jerusalem where she was studying to become a rabbi. There, inspiration struck and the rabbinate became his next calling.
His talents are multiple. He is a singer/songwriter in the American folk/blues tradition. Some of his songs are inspired by Jewish thought and text.
He was the founder and spiritual leader of B'nai Or Religious Fellowship, a Jewish Renewal Community in Boston. At B'nai Or he led creative services using guitar, song leading, storytelling and meditation to help draw Jews longing for a spiritual connection to their heritage.
He has officiated at all life cycle rituals from cradle to grave including more than 50 weddings and has helped prepare bar/bat mitzvah students.
Lev and Joyce Friedman have been married for 36 years. Joyce is a classical pianist and singer. All three of their daughters - Ariel, Mia, and Shoshana - are musicians.
Our Rabbinic Intern is looking forward to getting to know Shir Tikva members and the temple's culture. He says, "I am wide open to bringing my skills to the Shir Tikva mix."
