Temple Shir Tikva Self-Study Congregation Meetings
Temple Shir Tikva Self-Study - Multiple Opportunities for Participation!

As we embark on the next steps of our journey toward finding a senior rabbi for the temple, it is critical that we follow best practices, as well as embrace this unique opportunity to come together as a community, by conducting a self-study in which we listen to one another and assess who we are and what we want in our future leader. There are many ways for us to gather this information, and I want to alert you to all of them.

First, there will be two congregation-wide meetings. The first is on Sunday April 10 at the temple from 5 - 7:00 p.m. with a schmooze between 5:000 PM - 5:30 PM. The meeting will begin promptly at 5:300 PM. The second will be on Monday evening May 2 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a schmooze from 7:00 PM -7:30 PM and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30 PM. Skilled facilitators will help guide the conversation.

In addition to these meetings, Community Conversations will be taking place throughout the month of April for congregants with common interests. Specific dates and times will be made available as they are confirmed.

Finally, for the entire congregation, and especially for those unable to participate in person, a congregation-wide survey will be distributed with questions for you to share your thoughts.

Thank you all for your continued partnership as we proceed to this next opportunity for getting to know ourselves and one another more intimately. On behalf of the Rabbi Search Committee, together with the Congregational Engagement Committee, I look forward to learning with you.

Andrea Berlin: The Maccabees and Tel Kedesh: A Collision Between Site and Text

Join us for Simchat Shabbat followed by Shabbat dinner as we learn from Professor Andrea Berlin.

In this lecture, Professor Andrea Berlin will present the results of recent excavations at Tel Kedesh, the site of an imperial administrative complex in northern Israel. The discoveries here call into question the veracity of certain portions of the text of 1 Maccabees, and so offer direct testimony for a reconsideration of the relationship between the history of these events and their retelling in story.
Israel Connections Presents: Breakfast with Dr. Gil Atzmon
Wednesday, April 6, 8:30 a.m.

Prof. Gil Atzmon is the Associate Professor at the Laboratory for the Biology of Aging, Department of Human Biology, University of Haifa. He is also an Associate Professor, Departments of Medicine and Genetics and Member of the Institute for Aging Research, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York

Dr. Atzmon's focus is in a new and challenging field, epigenetics, involving the relationship of genetics to diseases, aging and longevity.  He and his team at the University of Haifa are gaining an understanding of the association of the whole genome to disease, performance, health and longevity.  Successful interpretation of the epigenetic signature associated with aging may lead to future crafting of treatments and interventions which will promote aging with grace.

Please R.S.V.P. by Friday, April 1 to Karen Edwards kedwards@shirtikva.org.
Adult Education Presents: What Matters?!
Sunday, April 10, 9 a.m.
What Matters?! Finding Well-Being Amid the "Overwhelm" and Complexity of the 21
st Century

Let's face it, for many of us, busy and overwhelmed have become the new normal. In fact, the World Health Organization has called Stress the #1 Health Epidemic of the 21st Century.

The What Matters?! framework is a practical set of five practices and mindsets to decrease stress and increase overall well-being.

Join co-founders David Garten and Paul Sherman for a two-hour workshop in which you will discover tools and resources that will help you to make daily choices to remain present and stay grounded in what is truly important to you. The What Matters?! framework draws upon multiple disciplines including positive psychology, adult learning theory, mindfulness, personal coaching, neurosciences, and philosophy. From a Jewish perspective, it closely parallels the concept of tikkun olam, repairing/healing the world. Learn more at  www.askwhatmatters.com/events

There is no charge for this event but please click here to register

In the early 1930's Hitler began firing Jewish musicians across Europe. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles, violinist Bronislaw Huberman transformed from a world renowned violinist to a humanitarian racing against time. He formed a symphony that would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.  With courage, resourcefulness and an entourage of allies including Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein, Huberman saved nearly 1000 Jews - and guaranteed the survival of Europe's musical heritage.

We are delighted to have as our guest speaker, Viola Morse, whose mother and uncle were two of the musicians recruited by Huberman to join this world famous Orchestra.
