Engaging Minds Workshops at Shir Tikva
Free Parent Workshop: "Strategies for Reducing Academic Stress and Creating Successful Students"
  • Sunday, January 31 at 9:15a.m. at Tempe Shir Tikva
  • Thursday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Shir Tikva
A recent survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that 83 percent of teens feel that school is "a somewhat or significant" source of stress. Teen stress has become an epidemic and most teens don't know how to manage it. Consequently, teens are endangering their long-term physical and mental health. Engaging Minds, an after-school learning center with practices in Newton and Wayland (right here at Shir Tikva!), is hosting two "Reducing Academic Stress" workshops, specifically designed for parents. The workshop will provide parents with actionable strategies they can use to help their children regain control of, and better manage, their academics to help reduce stress and increase self-confidence.

Engaging Minds is an after-school tutoring and coaching program that focuses on strengthening executive function skills (organization, prioritization, initiation of tasks, study skills, time management, goal-setting, planning) as a key driver in managing and reducing academic stress and student workload.
Please link to the attached flyer for more information on the workshop and if you have additional questions, please contact Dan Levine of Engaging Minds directly at dan@engagingmindsonline.com or 617-964-3100.

Volunteer at Pearl Street Cupboard and Cafe
Pearl Street Cupboard & Cafe, 10 Pearl Street, Framingham

Temple Shir Tikva will be providing volunteer meal servers twice a month at Pearl Street Cafe in Framingham. Operated by United Way, Pearl Street Cafe is a warm and welcoming place where those struggling with food insecurity can enjoy a "community supper" each Tuesday and Thursday evening. Volunteer adults (and children over 10 accompanied by an adult) act as wait-staff, serving guests a freshly prepared restaurant-style meal. A wonderful and rewarding mitzvah opportunity!

Saturday Morning Minyan and Torah Study
During the next six months, Cantor Schachner, Rabbi Gubitz and our Cantorial Intern, Audrey Klein, will continue to lead our Morning Minyan and Torah Study gatherings. However, there are a several dates that they will be busy with other Temple Shir Tikva programs such as Shabbat Yeladim (Tot Shabbat), Bar/Bat Mitzvah Torah Study and Shabbat B'Yachad (Shabbat Together).

We are very excited to inform you that Rabbi Michael Shire will be at Temple Shir Tikva on those Shabbats that our own clergy are unable to join us. Much of Rabbi Shire's work has been applied in our own Jewish learning programs at Shir Tikva. Rabbi Shire's wife, Rabbi Marcia Plumb, also highly regarded, may join him at times.

We hope that you will continue to or begin to participate in and enjoy our weekly Shabbat Morning Minyan and Torah Study.

See you on Shabbat!
Need a Little Help Understanding Friday Night Services?
For four weeks Shir Tikva will be piloting a short English-language "companion" to the regular Friday night prayer book.  The Ritual and Interfaith Families Committees collaborated to produce this tool.

Designed to give participants a better understanding of the Friday Night Shabbat services, our aim is to demystify the service and to break down those barriers in an effort to welcome more members on Friday nights.  Whether you have questions about the order of the liturgical pieces and their meanings or the rituals we perform and/or why we perform them, we hope this companion booklet will help our congregants better understand Friday Night Shabbat services.

The pilot version of the Siddur Companion will be available beginning with our New Member Shabbat on January 8, and each consecutive Friday night throughout the month of January. Your feedback on this tool is appreciated - a survey is included in each Companion, and a link to complete online will also be open in the coming weeks.
