Mussar
What is Mussar?
Ever wondered how you might become more mindful and self-aware? Do you sometimes feel you could better direct your reactions and impulses? Do you seek stronger, healthier relationships with others in your life, work and community?
Mussar is a centuries-old Jewish tradition that can help you develop inner awareness, and bring about transformation of the traits of the soul, in order to become the finest version of the person you already are.  Through journaling, meditation, and personal reflection, we will delve into Mussar using methods drawn from the Mussar Institute, www.mussarinstitute.org, and Everyday Holiness by Alan Morinis.

This cohort will be led by Rabbi Jennifer Gubitz.
The cost for each course is $72 for members and $108 for non-members.
To register, mail in a check to the temple office, attention Karen Edwards.

Kesher is Looking for New Members
Dear Friends,

Let's start the new year off with a gift of kindness. We all know we will be in need someday and we also all know how good it feels to give of oneself. One of the best and easiest ways is to sign up to volunteer for the Kesher committee. It calls for a quick fix sometimes for someone who might need some cheering up or maybe to share some good news. Sometimes it is just a quick drop off of a meal or a ride if someone is in need.
If you are interested having your name added to the volunteer list please let me know by sending me a quick note to dorway26@gmail.com.
Thanks so much and have a healthy and sweet New Year.

Regards,
Dorie Nickelsberg

In Our Community
Barry Shrage:  Adressing Jewish Poverty
Dear Synagogue Leader,

L'shanah tovah! My wish for a sweet new year extends to you and to all of your congregation. Sadly, a hopeful new year may feel out of reach for many in our Jewish community, where nearly 1 in 8 families are in, or are at risk of, a financial crisis. Within your congregation, there may be people who don't know how to ask for help or people with friends or family members who don't know where to turn.

I'm hoping that during your High Holiday services, you'll help me spread the word about a new effort to raise awareness about Jewish poverty and make it easier for those who have fallen on hard times to find the services they need.

The Talmud tells us that "Charity is equal in importance to all the other commandments combined." Perhaps this is because any individual can go through a difficult time, but it is how we respond as a community that makes all the difference.

At this link, you'll find information that you can include in print and electronic communications. From a new toll-free "warmline" at 1-800-CJP-9500, to our informative website at raiseyourhand.cjp.org, your congregation now has a simple way to find the help they need. If you need more outreach materials, please let us know by contacting Lori Silver, CJP's Anti-Poverty Initiative Director at 617-457-8867 or loris@cjp.org.

Thank you for partnering with us to alleviate poverty in the Jewish community.

With my warmest wishes,

Barry Shrage
President, CJP

Bus Tour of Jewish Boston Explores Synogogue Communities
Sunday, October 18 from 12:00-6:00 pm

Join us as we come together to explore the relationship between synagogue communities and their sacred sites.

What happens when demographic change requires a congregation to move to alternative space or a new community? How does a shul decide to remain in the same facility, and the same community, for generations? What kinds of renovations and infusion of capital are needed to bring this about?

SCM's "Bus Tour name" will take us from suburban congregations in Newton and Brookline through the urban neighborhoods of Roxbury and Dorchester, to the Vilna Shul in the West End, ending up at the Walnut Street Shul in Chelsea (not yet confirmed).

Along the way we will meet people and visit former and present synagogues that tell the larger story of Boston's Jewish history--a story in which each of us are participants and shapers.

We will begin and end at Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill (rain or shine).
Our tour will be led by Ellen Smith, historian and curator of Boston Jewish history; and Associate Professor, Dept. of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and Director, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, Brandeis University.

To join us for this exciting tour, advance registration is required ($45 per person).
