Adult Shabbaton Retreat

Kesher is Looking for New Members
Dear Friends,

Let's start the new year off with a gift of kindness. We all know we will be in need someday and we also all know how good it feels to give of oneself. One of the best and easiest ways is to sign up to volunteer for the Kesher committee. It calls for a quick fix sometimes for someone who might need some cheering up or maybe to share some good news. Sometimes it is just a quick drop off of a meal or a ride if someone is in need.

Mitzvah Project
Please help Kendall Geffen and Josh Schreiber collect art supplies for Jeff's Place Children's Bereavement Center.

Jeff's Place provides free support groups for kids and families, ages 3 to adulthood, coping with the death of someone close. More than 200 participants from more than 30 communities have shared their hearts at Jeff's Place. Its Mission is to facilitate healthy integration of loss for children, teens, and their families by helping them feel connected with each other and less alone in their grief journey.
 
Please bring supplies from the following wish list to the temple between September 1 and October 4. There is a collection bin outside the office, and Kendall and Josh will be collecting at a table and selling note cards made by the kids at Jeff's Place before and after Sunday School on October 4.

Barry Shrage:  Adressing Jewish Poverty
Dear Synagogue Leader,

L'shanah tovah! My wish for a sweet new year extends to you and to all of your congregation. Sadly, a hopeful new year may feel out of reach for many in our Jewish community, where nearly 1 in 8 families are in, or are at risk of, a financial crisis. Within your congregation, there may be people who don't know how to ask for help or people with friends or family members who don't know where to turn.

I'm hoping that during your High Holiday services, you'll help me spread the word about a new effort to raise awareness about Jewish poverty and make it easier for those who have fallen on hard times to find the services they need.

The Talmud tells us that "Charity is equal in importance to all the other commandments combined." Perhaps this is because any individual can go through a difficult time, but it is how we respond as a community that makes all the difference.

Bus Tour of Jewish Boston Explores Synogogue Communities
Sunday, October 18 from 12:00-6:00 pm
Join us as we come together to explore the relationship between synagogue communities and their sacred sites.
 
What happens when demographic change requires a congregation to move to alternative space or a new community? How does a shul decide to remain in the same facility, and the same community, for generations? What kinds of renovations and infusion of capital are needed to bring this about?
 
SCM's "Bus Tour name" will take us from suburban congregations in Newton and Brookline through the urban neighborhoods of Roxbury and Dorchester, to the Vilna Shul in the West End, ending up at the Walnut Street Shul in Chelsea (not yet confirmed).
 
Along the way we will meet people and visit former and present synagogues that tell the larger story of Boston's Jewish history--a story in which each of us are participants and shapers.
 
We will begin and end at Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill (rain or shine).
Our tour will be led by Ellen Smith,historian and curator of Boston Jewish history; and Associate Professor, Dept. of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and Director, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, Brandeis University.

Fall 2015 Cohort: Brandeis Design Lab Teen Fellowships
We are excited to announce that this fall 2015, the Brandeis Design Lab teen fellows will be working with the JCC Early Center to build an interactive outdoor play space!
 
As you may already know, the Brandeis Design Lab is a free fellowship that teaches motivated Jewish high school students the creative, design and building skills necessary to solve real world problems facing the Jewish community and the world. Over eight fun, action-filled Sunday's at Brandeis University, fellows use the innovative approach of design thinking to understand a local community problem and then design and execute a solution.

Me'ah Being Offered in Wayland-Sudbury Area this Fall

The Wayland/Sudbury Collaborative is delighted to be offering the Me'ah,  Program, beginning this fall.

 

The class will be held at Congregation Or Atid, Thursday evenings.

 

Me'ah (Hebrew for 100) provides adults of all backgrounds with an intellectual framework for understandingthe narrative of the Jewish people  Below are bios for the faculty for the first of the program's two years, who will teach Bible and Rabbinics respectively.

This program brings together caring parents and expert facilitators. Parents explore compelling Jewish texts and traditions while sharing stories and ideas about raising children. Parents from all backgrounds welcome.

Discussion topics include how to incorporate Judaism into your daily life, how to parent during a loss, how to approach tzedakah/charity as a family, how to raise resilient children and much more.
