Annual Fund Update

Never in recent years has the need for your Annual Fund contribution been greater. We are thrilled to be implementing many ideas from our Chazon visioning initiative:

  • The TST Center for Spirituality
  • Meaningful social action projects such as Family Promise
  • Interfaith programming.

Through these and other new programs, the temple community is connecting and engaging with you and your family in innovative, meaningful and fun ways.

To deliver all these positive experiences and to maintain the health of our temple, we need to raise $85,000 by May 2015.  This year, in part due to the 11th Plague of the never-ending winter, TST has been faced with unanticipated expenditures, including extraordinary snow removal AND significant repairs and maintenance costs to maintain our aging systems. As such, your contribution this year is vital to insuring our financial foundation.

We are fortunate that a family in our congregation has graciously come forward with a challenge match of up to $25,000 for the Temple Shir Tikva community. This generous family will match all first time gifts to the Annual Fund and all increased donations, made between now and the end of May.  This doubles the impact of your generosity - but only if you give now.   We need the help of every temple member, whether it is $18 or $18,000.  By increasing a gift already made, or making a new gift, you will play a central role in fostering our inclusive, vibrant, financially secure and sacred Jewish community.

Please help us meet this challenge by making an Annual Fund donation right now. Mail a check to the Temple office or donate online below.  Thank you, as always, for your generosity and your continued support.

From Victim to Survivor:
The Significance of Life Experiences After the Holocaust

Sunday May 10, 2015, 9 a.m.

The Israel Connections Committee presents:

Dr Anna Ornstein, Professor of Child Psychiatry, Harvard University

Join us for a wonderful opportunity to hear Dr. Ornstein and discuss the current relevance of the SHOAH. Dr. Anna Ornstein is an Auschwitz survivor, a Professor of Child Psychiatry at Harvard University, and Professor Emerita of Child Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. She lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. She presented accounts of her concentration camp experiences at yearly seders and collected them into a book "My Mother's Eyes."(2012) Dr. Orenstein's brilliant psychoanalytic mind, her extraordinary history, and her clinical experience have led to her unique contributions to psychoanalysis.  She has published over 90 articles and received many awards including the Special Presidential Commendation by the American Psychiatric Assn.

Dr. Ornstein, noting her very good and productive life, writes "Appreciating life, all the little joys, when you've experience the total loss of everything, you realize how little everything else matters." Now she asks the questions: What have we learned from the Holocaust? How do we prevent recurrences of these genocidal tragedies?

Dr. Jacob Meskin: "Understanding Anti-Semitism"

Dr. Meskin, a veteran Me'ah teacher and teacher-trainer, is noted for blending high-level intellectual and spiritual content with an open, engaging, and humorous teaching style that encourages conversation and interaction.

The course will meet for 10 weeks in the fall of 2015 and is designed specifically for sophisticated adult learners. "Understanding Anti-Semitism" aims 1) to acquaint students with the ancient and medieval roots of Anti Judaism in both the Christian and the Islamic traditions, and 2) to describe clearly how, in more recent times and in particular in the nineteenth century, various developments and individuals helped to transform these inherited anti Judaic roots into the modern phenomena of political and racial Anti-Semitism.  With this historical and conceptual framework in place, it becomes possible to understand the contemporary outbreak of various kinds of Anti-Semitism, whether they stem from fanatical forms of nationalism or of religion.

Sisterhood Book Group

Thursday, April 30, 2015; 7- 8:30 p.m.

In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist

For the third Sisterhood Book Group gathering of this programming year, we will be reading In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist by Ruchama King Feuerman. "An eczema-riddled, middle-aged former Lower East Side haberdasher, Isaac Markowitz, moves to Israel where he becomes, much to his own surprise, the assistant to a famous old rabbi who daily dispenses wisdom (and soup) to the collection of seekers gathered in his courtyard.

It is there that he meets Tamar, a young American woman on a mission to live a spiritual life with a spiritual man, and who sees Isaac as that man long before he sees himself that way. Into both of their lives comes Mustafa, a devout Muslim, deformed at birth, unloved by his own mother, a janitor who works on Temple Mount, holy to Muslims and Jews."

To find out what happens, read the book and join us for dessert and an engaging discussion (even if you haven't finished the book). For more information, contact tstsisterhood @shirtikva.org.

Humorist Kinky Friedman at the JCC

May 2, 8:00 p.m., Leventhal-Sidman JCC, Newton, MA

"He's the world's most famous Jewish cowboy. Heck, he might be the world's only Jewish cowboy." (KUDZOO Magazine, Fall 2014) He's author, singer, raconteur Kinky Friedman!

Richard "Kinky" Friedman is a Texas country singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist and politician who styles himself after popular American satirists Will Rogers and Mark Twain. Outrageous and politically incorrect but always thought-provoking, Friedman weaves social and political commentary into his songs and stories. He draws from a lifetime of material, including touring with Bob Dylan (1975-76), a failed bid for Governor of Texas in 2006, and an appearance in the movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Opening for Friedman are bluegrass/New Orleans style musicians Josh Lederman & Friends. The show is part of the JCC's Ryna Greenbaum JCC Center for the Arts and is co-sponsored by the Boston Jewish Music Festival. Tickets are $28. Contact 617-965-5226, boxoffice@jccgb.org or visit www.bostonjcc.org/artsevents.
